internet connection

I'm trying to connect my new Linux PC to the Internet wirelessly. It sits next to my old Windows PC which is connected to the Internet via a wireless router which has several outlets on. I put the CD into the Linux PC but nothing appears on the screen. I have two questions, 1. How do I get the CD instructions onto the screen and, 2. Is it just a matter of following these instructions?

What Linux PC are you using?

What CD are you trying to execute?

My Linux PC is a basic tower model with 2GB of memory, a 2.7 GHz processor and a 160 GB hard drive. Linux 11 is installed.
The CD I'm using is for installing wireless broadband to a PC through a router which is currently running on my elderly Windows PC which is alongside the Linux PC.

Is it a Windows CD ? Windows driver will not work in Linux. And Windows network installer can't configure Linux.

I think you've cracked it. This CD seemes to be for Windows and Apple Mac users. I guess I'll have to find another way to get on the internet. Any suggestions?

Hi,

Please first connect your wired network adapter to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1:

If you are using the Gnome interface, open the Terminal console via "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

If you are using the Unity interface, the easiest way to open the Terminal is to use the 'search' function on the dash. Or you can click on the 'More Apps' button, click on the 'See more results' by the installed section, and find it in that list of applications. A third way, available after you click on the 'More Apps' button, is to go to the search bar, and see that the far right end of it says 'All Applications'. You then click on that, and you'll see the full list. Then you can go to Accessories > Terminal after that.

So the methods in Unity are:
Dash > Search for Terminal
Dash > More Apps > 'See More Results' > Terminal
Dash > More Apps > Accessories > Terminal

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word lsmod. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.

No trouble connecting the ethernet cable but problems with copying from my Windows PC to my Linux. Is there a special way to do this? I've tried your way with the central mouse button and I've used Ctrl/C with Ctrl/P and also Shift+Ctrl+C and Shift+Ctrl+V as per Linux. No luck!

After sending you my previous message I thought I would have one last look on Linux, and to my surprise I found that I was on the internet with Firefox! Perhaps it was connecting the ethernet cable. I wonder if I can disconnect that now as I have wireless connection. Anyway, I'm very happy now. Many thanks.

OK! I've now sorted out the problem of copy/paste. I followed your instruction to connect the ethernet cable and I have now (at last) copy/pasted the "sudo.......Ismod" to the Linux Terminal and received the following message:

According to the Terminal output that you sent us, there is NO wireless adapter installed in your PC.

So it is not possible at the moment to establish a wireLESS connection. You can only use the wirED Internet connection, which works out-of-the-box in Ubuntu, as you have already noticed.

If you want to connect it wirelessly, you need to go buy a wireless adapter...

OK, I will certainly look into the question of acquiring another wireless adapter, but why is it then that I can send emails on Evolution in Ubuntu? I admit that I can't receive them but that's currently being dealt with in another stream.

I forgot to mention in my previous message that I can also access the internet via Firefox, but, again, I can't download anything from the internet via Firefox. The same thing that is happening with incoming emails in Evolution. It's all oneway traffic. To read your messages to me I have to go to the internet through my old Windows PC
