Installing BSNL 3G Data Card USB modem on Ubuntu 11.04
Not able to install the BSNL 3G Data Card LW272 on Ubuntu 11.04 for a HSDPA connection to Internet. It installs then uninstalls stating that the application doesn't meet Ubuntu quality standards (no lower case fonts or maintenance address).
In fact the file is in the archive and can be opened manually. This allows an Internet connection but does not allow phone calls or messages or dialogue.
What is not in the archive is the Setup file which would allow the connection to open automatically and make available all services like phone and messages.
Not able to get the correct setup code for Ubuntu from BSNL (India). They are only interested in servicing Windows which works perfectly with this kind of connection.
Is there some way that the Ubuntu quality standard demand could be by-passed so that the application could be installed?

Can you reboot without the device attached and run:
lsusb; lsb_release -a; echo
Then attach the device, wait 10 seconds then run:
dmesg | tail -n 15; lsusb
Copy ALL the output and paste the output here
Thanks

With reference to Amit's instructions, we cannot edit the /lib/udev/
Note that we are not programmers but only Ubuntu users. Pls give simple direct instructions without discussions that we are not able to follow.

Then run:
gksudo gedit /lib/udev/
And you WILL get write access. The file isnot owned by your user so you need the extra access which sudo gives. Its also why you need your password for installing applications and updates. Your user doesn't have the access to the system in order to install the updates, sudo gives the power you need.

We had created the udev rule, by editing the file/lib/
after your valuable advice of the terminal command.
But we had been stranded about your next command of Create usb_modeswitch configuration.
We went to the etc/usb_
We even tried to gksudo gedit /etc/usb_
It may not be the right command.
Please help us as it is the last phase of the action required.
Thanks for all your help so far.

After a good start we have been left stranded.
We cannot proceed with help.
There are hundreds maybe thousands of Ubuntu users who are having this problem installing the 3G modem device. A solution to installing this device on an Ubuntu OS would help many people.
If no solution is there, then it means we don't have access to all of the facilities on the device: no phone, no email, no messaging, no dialogue to tell if we are connected or if our #G plan is still valid.
Without access to these facilities we have to revert to the Windows OS where the device works perfectly. We don't want to do that. We like Ubuntu very much and are dedicated users. But in this instance we have no choice as work has to be done and we cannot spend time fooling around trying to get this device to work.
BSNL will not help. Neither will any of the other telecom companies. There are not enough Ubuntu users (or they are not aware of them) to motivative them to programme the device for the Ubuntu OS. For the telecom companies only Windows exists. Ubuntu public relations should make an effort to change this sad circumstance.
So what is to be done?

Hello Namaachi and actionparsnip
I am Nitesh, and i am also having the exact problem in using BSNL 3G datacard on Ubuntu 11.04.
My model is Micromax MMX 310G. i was using it on ubuntu 10.04 using Sakis3g script and it was working fine. But when i switched to ubuntu 11.04 i am getting this problem.
But
For me the usb device does not detects as a usb modem by the network manager for most of the times. But sometimes when i start the computer with the device plugged in , the network manager detects it, but that happens very occasionally.
I hope you'll get this sorted out and help the 3g datacard users to reap its benefits.
One thing is for sure we dont want to switch back to Windows. What has been mentioned by Namaachi , that is precisely the case with telecom companies.
