can not enable wi-fi on older hp computer ze5620us
I am attempting to use Ubuntu 10.10 with an old Windows XP laptop computer with built in wi-fi adapter. (HP Pavilion ze5620us). The WIFI card works great in windows, but will not now enable. I found a similar answer and attempted to execute the following instructions.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter
When I execute the instructions I am asked for my password. At that point I can no longer enter any information. The cursor just flashes and nothing can be entered. I then get a password error.
I am new to Ubuntu and just installed it. I have the system connected to the internet via wired connection. The software is installed on the hard disk.
Please advise on what I can do the resolve this matter.
Thank you
Al Blencoe
Hello,
Mark kindly resolved my password problem and I executed he above command. The results of it are shown below. I still can not access wireless . Wireless network is greyed out and devise not ready (firmware missing). I installed version 10.01 and since upgraded to 11.04. As noted above this is my first attempt at using Linix and am really a novice when using and reading data from terminal commands.
Any help is certainly appreciated.

When Ubuntu asks for your password (the password you use to log in), simply type it in and hit <ENTER>. It is normal that Ubuntu does not show your password. It is not displayed for security reasons.

Hi,
Please first connect your wired network adapter to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).
In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:
Step 1:
If you are using the Gnome interface, open the Terminal console via "Applications-
If you are using the Unity interface, the easiest way to open the Terminal is to use the 'search' function on the dash. Or you can click on the 'More Apps' button, click on the 'See more results' by the installed section, and find it in that list of applications. A third way, available after you click on the 'More Apps' button, is to go to the search bar, and see that the far right end of it says 'All Applications'. You then click on that, and you'll see the full list. Then you can go to Accessories > Terminal after that.
So the methods in Unity are:
Dash > Search for Terminal
Dash > More Apps > 'See More Results' > Terminal
Dash > More Apps > Accessories > Terminal
Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https:/
Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/
Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.
Step 4: Please also clarify if you installed Ubuntu to the harddisk and are running from a harddisk install OR if you are only testing Ubuntu in a LiveCD session.
Regards,
Mark

Please do not cut my command into several pieces. It will not work that way.
Please visit the following URL and you will see what I mean:
https:/
One last time: here is the CORRECT command to COPY-PASTE into the Terminal:
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/
My command starts with sudo and ends with lsmod
Your commands did not.

Mark,
I am sorry about not copying the commands correctly. Looking back I can see exactly what you warned against. I cannot find in any of the references you sent how to get the code that copies and pastes correctly. I typed the commands directly from your e-mail into the terminal and the code will paste into terminal. Before I try to execute it again, will you review the questions I have outlined at the end of the typed code? Also any other items you might see that will impact this working correctly.
Thank you
Al
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo |shw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/
QUESTIONS:
1. is there a space after each ;
2. is |egrep separated from 'acx by a space in the email it is on separate lines
3. not sure in command rtl if l is a 1 can not be sure looks like should be l as found in /var/lib/ command

Please copy-paste the commands from the Firefox or Chromium webbrowser. You need to copy-paste my long command that is located here:
https:/
Do not try to copy-paste the commands contained in the Email message. You need to visit the URL and answer using a WEBBROWSER, NOT using an Email client.
I already explained this in step 2, where I wrote:
"Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https:/
I also explained how to copy-paste in step 2, I quote:
"Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!"

Hi,
The error "b43legacy-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43legacy/
Please proceed with the following commands:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter
b43-fwcutter exists in the Ubuntu repositories, but you will need a working wired Internet connection in Ubuntu in order to locate it and install it.
The only way to do that - in your case - is to connect the pc to the wireless router using a LAN cable, instead of using wireless.
Reboot your PC after installing b43-fwcutter.
Then retest wireless.
Regards,
Mark

Installing b43-fwcutter and rebooting should have solved this issue.
If I were you, I would simply backup my /home partition, format the / (root) partition and do a clean install of 11.04. Then reinstall b43-fwcutter and reboot....
Or you could test the Linux Mint LiveCD and see if it supports your wireless card out-of-the-box.
However, Linux Mint is not supported on this forum....
Can you help with this problem?
Provide an answer of your own, or ask blenintosh for more information if necessary.
