Firefox can't find the server at www.google.co.uk.

Asked by Anil8645

I have been using Ubuntu 10.10 for the last 4 months with no problems in fact very happy with it. Since yesterday I cannot get into any of the search engines i.e googlea and yahoo. I can however get into other pages like speedtest, internet banking etc. My emails are google email address which I access using Evolution which has also stopped working. No changes to the PC have been made apart from the usual updates the last one being 5 days ago. I tried to install Chromium browser from Ubuntu Software Center and I get message 'Requires installation of untrusted packages'. All these problems started yesterday. Please help quickly. I would hate to go back to Windows.

Many thanks.

Hello Anil8645,

This is weird, please give me the output of this command from your terminal program (Applications > Accessories > Terminal):
nslookup www.google.co.id

It will check the ip address of google.
The same goes for yahoo.
nslookup www.yahoo.com

Looking forward for your information...

Hi,

Thanks for your prompt reply. I attach a file after running the commands you
asked for. I am appear to be having this problem with only certain servers -
google, yahoo & our domain name to download our emails using Thunderbird. I
am sending this email from a Windows machine which is running ok for the
above problems.

Thanks again for you assistance.

Kind Regards

Anil

Hi Anil Sharma,

It seems you have trouble with your DNS - Domain Name Service on your Ubuntu Box.
Would you mind give us the DNS you're using with your Ubuntu?

Run this command from your terminal program (Applications > Accessories > Terminal):
cat /etc/resolv.conf

Copy all the output and then paste here...

Hi Luky Winarto,
The dns details as requested:

anil@anil-Dell-XPS710:~$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
# Generated by NetworkManager
nameserver 192.168.1.1
anil@anil-Dell-XPS710:~$

I am confused as to why I am getting this problem. I have been using Ubuntu
since December 2010 with no problems whatsoever.

Thanks very much for your prompt replies.

Kind Regards

Anil

Hmmm... how about change the dns to opendns:

sudo nano /etc/resolv.conf

It will ask your ubuntu password.

Then... you will see:
nameserver 192.168.1.1

Change into:
nameserver 208.67.222.222

Exit by pressing CTRL+X then it will ask you if you want to save the changes. Just press 'y'
Then, try to visit some sites; e.g. google or yahoo

Hopefully this will work...

Can you help with this problem?
