Wireless Driver not enabled? Vodaphone K3805-Z

Asked by Tom

Hi :)

On the boat we have a dual-boot machine but only Windows can access the internet. Ubuntu seems to see the device but can't use it?? Some command-line results

bill@NetbookUbuntu:~$ sudo iwconfig
[sudo] password for bill:
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
usb0 no wireless extensions.

wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSIDff/any
Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=20 dBm
Retry long limit:7 RTS thrff Fragment thrff
Encryption keyff
Power Managementff

pan0 no wireless extensions.

From lshw i got this ....

*-network
description: Wireless interface
product: AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter
vendor: Atheros Communications Inc.
physical id: 0
bus info: pci@0000:02:00.0
logical name: wlan0

serial: 00:26:b6:53:28:62
width: 64 bits

capabilities: bus_master cap_list ethernet physical wireless
configuration: broadcast=yes driver=ath5k latency=0 multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11bg
resources: irq:16 memory:f0100000-f010ffff

Obviously i cant access the repos or anything else from the internet while in Ubuntu but i can use download scripts from Synaptic although it is NOT easy so please be gentle!

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Maybe needs ath9k driver.
Verify it the module exists.
lsmod | grep ath

Reference.

http://madwifi-project.org/
http://snapshots.madwifi-project.org/

Little howto from Mark, just adjust it to your needs.

Hi Tom,

Make sure to read the bold text at the following page:

http://madwifi-project.org/

"In case you use kernel 2.6.25 or newer, you need to get this snapshot of the madwifi-0.9.4 branch instead of the v0.9.4 release! That snapshot is basically v0.9.4 plus compilation fixes for recent kernels."

So if you want to test madwifi using kernel 2.6.25 or newer, you will need to compile and install the following drivers:

http://snapshots.madwifi-project.org/madwifi-0.9.4-current.tar.gz

After that, you will have to blacklist the ath5k driver.

I guess you can download the madwifi drivers using Windows.

Regards,

Mark

Hi :)
Madwifi states that it is not for usb-devices?! I have downloaded it anyway as a tarball but i don't know how to install them :( This netbook is on Ubuntu 10.04 but i am not sure what kernel number. I will try to do "uname -a" when i reboot. I will also try to run AP's command.

I tried running Mark's command but had to disable the updates. Oddly synaptic is misbehaving, it's download scripts are not working in Windows so i have to download debs individually. So, here's the command i ran

sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep '8180|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|usb|witch|wl'; iwconfig; cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep '8180|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|witch|wl'; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; cat /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state; sudo lsmod

Hi :)

I have info requested by each of the 3 responses so far. Sam's helpful link
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/80764
seemed to show how to instal tarballs but i get easily confused. Wget downloads so i downloaded through Windows into an ntfs partition. Presumably i need to copy the tarball to "Documents" in Ubuntu? Then the line
tar xvf madwifi-trunk-r4088-20090825.tar.gz
creates a folder? and unpacks? Presumably i should change the instruction to
tar xvf madwifi-0.9.4-current.tar.gz
and then the rest looks like it stays about the same?

Ok, the info requested

Linux NetbookUbuntu 2.6.32-26-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Wed Nov 24 09:00:03 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
So the kernel is newer than 2.6.25 so i have downloaded the madwifi driver ...
http://snapshots.madwifi-project.org/madwifi-0.9.4-current.tar.gz
I am worries that the MadWifi site said it did ot handle usb-devices and this dongle is a usb one. If i try it then presumably it wont hurt the rest of the system and if i find the old dongle then that would still possibly work?

For ActionParsnip

Errr, sorry for the multi-post. I have posted the question in
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?p=4334221#post4334221
but got almost no responses there. I think i need to re-post here now that the thread is so long and so old already.

Hi :)

I heard from UbuntuForums that Ubuntu 10.10 has the drivers built into the kernel and everything set-up nicely. Apparently the 11.04 does too so when i go back to the boat i will try the 11.04 as LiveCd or on a spare partition. Then i get LibreOffice already installed so it's a double-win if not more :)

I really want to split the karma points between Sam and Mark. Both gave good links along with explanations to help me start learning a bit about wireless broadband devices. This meant i could work at a few things myself instead of just waiting & hoping for further responses after giving the requested info.

Many thanks and regards from
Tom :)
