Linux as a router, file server?

Asked by Robert Murphy

I am new to the whole Linux thing. So far I am loving it. What I want to do is set up my Linux box that is also acting as a file server to be a router. From what I have read on line it looks like I can do this. Only think is like I said before I am new to this and all the directions I have found on line are going over my head. So s there anybody out there that has a link or can give me some easy step by setup instructions i would appreciate it. Thank You vary much.

These are not exactly step-by-step, but its probably as close as you will get. There are several options depending upon the setup you want.

Remember it may be cheaper in the long-run to simply buy a dedicated router, rather than use an old PC, as the power bills can add up; just do a quick calculation based upon the rated power consumptions for the PC you are planning to use, vs a normal router.

Just a comment on the cost calculation.

If there is a system on both networks already (such as my web server) the additional power consumption is negligible.

The power costs of my latest machine at Los Angeles rates is about $25/month. So a PC used only as a router/firewall is a significant cost.
