Change subnet mask settings in 10.10 or 10.04

Asked by Jimmy Alexander

I have an Acer Net-book Atom N270 duel booting MS Windows XP and Ubuntu 10.10. My wireless modem works well, but when I try to change from my Verizon Hotspot MIFi 2200 , the sub-net mask shows using XP 255.255.255.0 . I can not get Internet service using my ATT Wireless Router it is a 2WIRE 2701HG-B. my ATT Wireless Router shows a sub-net mask of 255.255.0.0. It also happens occasionally running XP, I have to open a command window and use ipconfig / release and then ipconfig /renew. Then everything is OK in XP. I do not have the option or do not know how in UBUNTU 10.10. I have tried ifconfig and it has an error message. Using network manager it shows the above wrong sub=net mask. Is there another way to approach this matter? I keep hearing about WCID that has to be installed using synaptic package manager. I am a newbie using Ubuntu. So be kind and help if you can. I know MS-DOS Pretty Good from years ago, but Ubuntu is new to me. Thanks you in advance.

Hello Jimmy Alexander,

If you're already associate with the wireless router then you can run this command from your terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal)
$ sudo dhclient

The you will get new ip address and subnetmask from your wireless router. This command is like you did on XP. Have a nice try...

I tried your method and it did not work. I did with the wireless connected to network but no internet. Then I tried it with wireless on but not connected. I am going to ATT and ask them as I to release and renew when I went back to XP. Thanks again. If there any other ideas I would appreciate the help. Oh Yes, it worked OK on my MiFi2200 hot spot. No problems there.

It seems you have to configure your ATT Wireless Router to act as DHCP Server. If you can connect to ATT then you have to see that you got the same subnet mask with ATT.
Try to configure your ATT with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and also enable its DHCP feature. Then ping your gateway IP Address, then ping some sites (e.g: www.google.com)

Have a nice try...

I have contacted ATT, am waiting for a reply. I think this a bigger problem than I ask you about. I have brought over 5 different Laptops with different operating systems than mine. I think it is with the Wireless Router. They all see the network. They all log onto the network. But then they all have to ipconfig /release and ipconfig/ renew to get to the Internet. Mine (4) computers log on to the network and internet if connected by Ethernet cable. But when unplugged and they go to wireless they all stop on connections to the Internet. I have 3 with Windows XP and one with Ubuntu 10.10. The others are a HP Desktop with Vista, AN HP Laptop with Vista, a Net-top (Dell) WITH XP and another Acer with Win 7 Starter. The same Problem with all. All of these 8 Computers have no Problem Logging on to MiFi2200 from Verizon. So my conclusion is in the 2Wire Router. Oh Yes I have reset the unit to Factory Defaults per the Manuel. Here goes again. Thanks for your kindness in helping me. Do not close this Ticket out until my problems are fixed. I will keep all informed.
My Best, Jimmy Alexander

Hello to All that read my post. To Luky Winarto my special thanks to you. All that was done did not help my situation. ATT had to do something to their end that talked to my router. Then a Very Nice agent called Me today and made some changes to the router settings via the direct connected computer. Now all is OK. You kindness in helping me is appreciated. I have learned a lot about terminal in this process. I have purchased the Ubuntu Guide and in the process of studying it. Thanks to all.
