How do you configure the network for IPv4 address (wired and wireless connection)?

Asked by jxwxnx

Hi,
I'm being helped by someone in here already with regards to connections, however, both of us are at loss with this problem: How do you configure the network for IPv4 to get it connected? I already did the ifconfig command in the Terminal and here is what I got:

jaime@jaime-Aspire-3680:~$ ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1b:24:32:14:a3
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:2929 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:17 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:185053 (185.0 KB) TX bytes:5814 (5.8 KB)
          Interrupt:16

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
          UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
          RX packets:100 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:100 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
          RX bytes:7784 (7.7 KB) TX bytes:7784 (7.7 KB)

My IPv4 settings are like this:
-dhcp box is checked
-require ipv4 addressing box is also checked
-IPv6 is already ignored and disabled

And regardless of my laptop being connected or not to the internet wire, my "wireless icon" is always showing an exclamation mark over it which suggests that I am disconnected from the network.

I've been trying to fix my laptop for days now...

My other question that has to do with this can be found on this link: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/150362
I don't know if that will help in anyway...

If"if " you are using dhcp then set your wierd connection to automatic. If however you have a static ip address you will need to put your info in the boxes.

How do I know if I'm using DHCP? Is it the one found in the IPv4 settings in the tab? If so, then how do I set my wired connection into automatic?
Below is the setting of my network at the moment. Hopefully that can help

Everything is as it is in the Auto Etho connection (last used: never)
-Connect automatically is checked
-Available to all users is checked

-The Device MAC address: is empty
-Cloned MAC address: is empty
-MTU: set to automatic bytes

-802.1x Security tab is unchecked

-Ipv4 Settings Method is: Automatic (DHCP)
-Require Ipv4 addressing for this connection to complete is checked

-There`s nothing in the Routes area...nothing is checked too

-Ipv6 method: is ignore

Is there something that I should install from the disk?

PS: I also tried going to SYSTEM-ADMINISTRATION-WINDOWS WIRELESS DRIVERS and I can see anything in the “Currently Installed Windows Drivers”
