belkin wireless device F5D5070B and router g

Asked by Carlos Perez

Hi,
I have just started to work with Ubuntu 10.10 on a Pentium 3 Dell XPS T500. Literally this is the first time that I have tried anything away from Windows. I like it a lot. It's fairly simple. I got everything to work, but the wireless. I'm using a Belkin G Network Adapter, the F5D7050B. I tried using the set up CD, but as I thought, it doesn't load since it's written for Windows. I also tried to follow some steps from the http://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Device/Belkin_F5D7050_ver_3000(Ralink_rt73_driver), but when I got to the headers command, the system tells me that the package doesn't exist. If anyone knows another way, then I'll be more than willing to listen. I've been stuck on this for 3 days now. Ubuntu sees the wireless network, but when I put the passcode for the network, it starts thinking for a little while and then it just disconnects sending me and my hopes offline. I'll be waiting on some responses.

You don't need to install a special driver as it comes with ubuntu by default.
Your device

USB: 050D:705A Belkin Components F5D7050 Wireless G Adapter v3000 [Ralink RT2573]

is supported (http://wiki.debian.org/WiFi/rt73#supported)

Try this: open a terminal and type

tail -f /var/log/messages

then try to connect, enter password and see if any message there suggests there's an error in the process. Maybe there's a problem with the authentication method not being supported by the driver.

Try changing the router's setup to connect with no password or change the authentication method.

To all the ones that responded to my question, I thank you very much. I used the software out of the ubuntu software center. It didn't work with the network device that I had because it simply didn't work (dumb me), I went and exchanged it, and now were in businness: MY UBUNTU IS ONLINE! So thanks again for helping me in the first of I hope not many endeavors with my ubuntu.
