New To Ubuntu Trying To Set Up Linksys Router And Mount DVD/CD Drive

Asked by John Richardson

Hello everyone!

Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a Lenovo ideapad. I have never used any version of Linux or Ubuntu before.

There is no other operating system on my laptop.

First issue - I am trying to set up a wireless network in my home. I have comcast cable high speed internet. I have a rented RCA cable modem that is currently directly connected to my laptop and I am online.

I bought a linksys (cisco) wrt120n Wireless-N Home Router today. I simply want to configure the router so that I can access the internet with my iPad. I put the installation CD in my CD/DVD drive (knowing full well that this was not going to work), hoping magic would happen. This takes us to issue number two :

Second issue - How do you access files on a CD/DVD drive using Ubuntu? In places-computer I find no CD/DVD drive listed.
How do you make Ubuntu recognize the drive?

To summarize - I need to set up a wireless network so I can access the internet on my iPad and iPhone. I also need to be able to access files on CD's and DVD's.

I know these questions and problems have probably been asked many, many times here, but I could not find any real answer to my problem.

Thanks!!

If the router is setup, you don't need the CD. All you need to do is get your wireless working and it will be ok.

Can you give the output of:

sudo lsb_release -a; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list

Thanks

Thanks for replying!

Just so you know, when I disconnect the modem directly from the laptop, Ubuntu says it sees my wireless network, and says that I am connected at 100% .... I am not online however .... I have to plug back into the laptop directly to actually get online.

Here is what shows up in the terminal window when I type the commands you gave me (when I am connected as such : cable line from floor into modem - ethernet cable from modem into "internet" port on router):

john@john-Lenovo-IdeaPad-Y530:~$ sudo lsb_release -a;sudo lshw -C network;rfkill list

I can tell you what I did to get my wireless router installed last friday.
1) Plug ethernet cable from cablemodem to WAN slot in router (check quick install guide)
2) Plug any computer to a ethernet slot in the router
3) Power on cablemodem
4) Power on router
5) In the wired PC's Firefox go to http://192.168.1.1/ (as router manual sais)
6) Set up DHCP in router and wifi
7) Set router's name
8) Apply changes (it restarts the router)
9) Start notebook and check wireless

This is all explained in the router's manual. If you can't read the CD, download it form manufacturer's webpage.
