Problem connecting my laptop through ethernet

Asked by John Hancock

I have a Toshiba 1990 Tecra 8000 with xubuntu 9.10 installed. I have plugged my ethernet cable from my modem which already is connected to my other computer. When I start up my computer it says I am not connected, I am a total noob to the linux, ubuntu stuff. I have no idea how to connect and would like some help with it.

My connection is through a router, but I have cloned the MAC address of the router to be the same as the laptop used to set up the cable modem. Maybe your modem only works with one MAC address like mine does. R click on the network-manager (the pie shaped set of arcs in the toolbar), and select edit connections. Select wired tab, then you see fields for MAC address (filled in), and cloaned MAC (empty). Find the MAC of the laptop which works, and fill in the cloaned field with that value. Make sure the dhcp is checked, and you hopefully will be all set.

Can you help with this problem?
