dell truemobile 1150 not working

Asked by Henry Robinson on 2011-03-13

Just installed ubuntu 10.10 version. I am totally new to linux. I can't get the dell truemobile 1150 wireless to work on my laptop. If I try to open the window and configure it, it trys to connect, but then comes back and says "disconnected". I can connect to the internet only through my ethernet connection right now. I have been reading the forum and can't really tell what to do much. I did open a terminal window and type lspci and it listed all my devices, it would appear that I have Intel 82801 Mobile PCI Bridge rev. 42. Not sure if that helps my cause. I did read about this ndiswrapper utility, tried typing that in a terminal window but it came back and said it couldn't find the utility. I really thought linux would be a better choice than windows xp, but if I can't get the wireless to work, then it is kind of pointless to continue.

New to Ubuntu: read the Ubuntu Manual, it's very informative: http://ubuntu-manual.org/
Click on the "download Button" to download the latest PDF version.
The online help https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/index.html

Well the manual is nice, but it doesn't help me with my problem. Everything is enabled, but there are no networks shown. When I originally looked at this operating system before installing it, I had XP and when running from the cd, I could see all available networks, but couldn't connect to any. I figured that since I was just running it this way that I wouldn't be able to until I actually installed it. I did set this up so that XP was no longer installed on my laptop. Could it be that I don't have drivers installed? I did search for drivers, but did not find any that support linux for this network card.

Please first connect your wired network adapter to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word lsmod. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|usb|witch|wl'; iwconfig; cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|witch|wl'; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; cat /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state; sudo lsmod

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.

debbi@debbi-Latitude-C640:~$ sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|usb|witch|wl'; iwconfig; cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|witch|wl'; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; cat /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state; sudo lsmod

This is normally a bug in some application using the D-Bus library.

Install wicd and it will be fine. The device is seen as Eth1 and (as far as I know) network manager only uses wlan0. Wicd should make life a lot easier (it also has a cli interface too which is great for servers)

Couldn't install the software. I also found that I couldn't install some other software as well.
Something is really wrong here. I am going to do a complete re-install again. If that doesn't work, then I am going back to windows.

Your choice what OS you use.Use a wired conection and wicd will be installable

Okay, I completely reinstalled linux. I was now able to install the WICD software. The WICD software was able to detect my wireless network; however when I try to connect, it comes back with connection failed, unable to get IP address.

Is the wireless an internal device or a USB stick?

internal device

Sure its not a PCMCI card?

That information was no help. This other individual obviously did a lot and nothing was resolved. It seems that there is no solution to the wireless situation.

If you run:

sudo apt-get install linux-firmware

Is it alread installed? If not then reboot and it may help to load the new firmware

Ran that. Rebooted. Tried to connect...Connection failed, unable to obtain IP address.

I believe your wireless card has been affected by the following nasty bug that is STILL not properly solved:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/498336

I suggest trying the following workarounds:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/498336/comments/86

and

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/498336/comments/93

I have no further suggestions to make...

Can you help with this problem?
