WiFi not working on HP ProBook 6550b

Asked by amorfis

I just installed Ubuntu on my new HP ProBook 6550b laptop. However, to my surprise, WiFi is not working. It is shown in lspci, but looks like not working. Looks like there are no WiFi networks, but I'm sure there is at least one. My home one. It works well on Windows, detects networks and connects.

Can you give the output of:

uname -a; lsb_release -a; echo; sudo lshw -C network

Thanks

MANY wireless chips don't work out of the box as there are so many DIFFERENT chips which are completely unfeasible to accommodate. Some do work straight away, some require a little effort.

There is a chance it's one of those cheap Broadcom 43xx chips which are super easy to setup but the output will tell us.

Yes, it is Broadcom 4313. Outputs below. I bought this laptop because it is certified to work with ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/hardware/201101-6954). There are even no Certification Notes.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx

Shows how you can use the liveCD to install the driver, it is available you just need to kick it off. The firmware in the hardware is proprietary so cannot be included in the CD but the tool to create the driver can be included.
