I am not getting a good IP address when I connect to my AP

Asked by John DeFilippo

This is a new install of ubuntu 10.10. This is my first time using ubuntu. It says that I am connected to my home Linksys AP but the IP address I am getting is 10.X.X.X and not the 192.168.1.X that I expected. Also, I cannot ping the AP or anywhere on the internet. I tried to set ubuntu to DHCP but it does not change the address. What other settings in ubuntu do I need to set.

If your access point is broadcasting its ESSID and is set to use DHCP, very little is needed at the Ubuntu end other than an encryption type and the key (assuming you are using NetworkManager). Using a wire (lan cable) to connect to your access point, in your browser try and connect to http://192.168.1.1 (or whatever your ap's expected address is). You should get a login screen for an admin password. Depending upon the Linksys model, there are different defaults -- try a blank username and admin for the password. Google your model if that does not work. Last resort is to reset the router to factory defaults, but you lose all your keys, name, etc. Next screen has Setup/Basic Setup, and you select the internet connection type -- Automatic DHCP is what I use -- works for Linux and Windows. If it's set to anything else, you have to figure out why, and what other machines will be affected by changing things.

Can you help with this problem?
