3g internet key K3806-z (vodafone) does not connect

Asked by Giacomo

I have a VIK K3806-Z Internet key. I'm on Ubuntu 10.10 64bit.

The key properly asks to insert the PIN, when plugged in, it also display blue or green blinking light (when on GPRS or UMTS signal).
When plugged, Network Manager find Mobile Broadband capabilities. I can enable it and create a new Internet Connection with the details of my internet profile. (APN)
However, I never managed to get it connect through Network Manager / Modemmanager.
I also installed the experimental packages (Debian testing) for usb-modemswitch 1.1.6 and usb-modem-switch-data, but I have the same situation.

(i only managed to connect it once through the script: sakis3g.)

How can I debug this problem and report it where appropriate?

I think it's a modemmanager problem, but I don't have idea where to find relevant information (a part from the usual lsusb, dmesg)

Thanks,
gp

The first step would be to see if the USB system is recognising your device as a modem or as a USB mass storage device -- some of these 3G dongles have an annoying "dual" personality, where unless you send them the appropriate control instruction they will present themselves as mass-storage, rendering the modem useless until you can flip that switch.

Check the output from

lsusb

and then look at the hexadecimal identifier, and check to see what that matches against.

Following that, I would be using wvdial to diagnose further.

Can you help with this problem?
