I need a well explained tutorial on what to do and how to do it step by step. Most of the blogs are misleading and the explanation is confusing.

To enter the command given above and similar commands please open a terminal (ctrl+alt+T, or from the applications menu), and then enter the command

lsusb

(this starts with a small L character, not a capital i)
The best way is to use copy and paste, this eliminates the risk of typo errors.

Can you then please copy and paste the output into this question as a response, and we will try to help you further.

The lsusb output does not show any usb modem, so I guess you did that commend at a moment when the E160 was not plugged in.
Can you please plug that device in, wait a minute, issue the lsusb command again, and post the output.

Please do the following:

Open Terminal.
Type: sudo apt-get install usbmodeswitch.
Once this is installed please remove the modem and reboot.
After reboot, insert modem and it shoud not appear as a drive now.
You can configure your providers settings from the network icon up near your clock.

deewinc,

I am using the same type of modem, a Huawei E160, running on Ubuntu 10.10 when writing these lines.
(Do not get confused that lsusb shows this device as an E220/E270)

what I have to do:

I have to have my usb stick plugged in when booting the computer
When I am logged in, there is a network icon in the notification area in the top right area of my screen.
I had to enter the connection details once, and now I just left click on that icon, select my mobile broadband provider and I am online.

Just to check if your system recognizes the device, can you issue the following command in a terminal

grep -A 10 -B 5 ttyUSB /var/log/dmesg

and copy and paste the output here?
