eth0 connects fine from my router port but not straight from the modem

Asked by Guy M

connecting eth0 to the internet from one of my router ports works no problem
trying to get online directly from the cable modem will not work.
This just recently happend on an old dell desktop. I decided to verify this with my laptop and the same thing.
Using dhcp in network manager on the desktop.
The person who is going to use the desktop has no router just a modem.

Thanks in advance
Guy

You are probably not running a DHCP server on the modem. You may need to configure a static address.

Can you provide any info on the type of modem?

According to random internet sites, the device self-assigns in the absence of a DHCP server.

Try setting up a static IP, and DNS and gateway

set the IP to 192.168.0.100, and the DNS and gateway to 192.168.01

(right click the cable icon, edit connections, add new wired connection, IPv4 settings ->manual)

Ack, I misread that

set the IP to 192.168.100.10, and the DNS and gateway to 192.168.100.1
