Painfully SLOW internet connection, please help

Asked by Mark LaRose

We recently upgraded our internet speed and AT&T sent us a new modem. The internet works fine on windows but is extremely slow when using ubuntu 10.04, often taking 10 seconds or more to load a webpage. It should be noted that I was able to surf the internet just fine on ubuntu with the old modem. I know the problem is not our router because it is still just as slow when the modem is plugged directly into the computer. Anyone have any ideas?

It may be a DNS slowness problem. See this page

The screenshots should guide you. You should install pdns-recursor (search for "recursor" in software center). Then in the network connection settings, under IPv4 select to use only automatic IP addresses and enter 127.0.0.1 under DNS servers.

If it does not work, revert to your previous settings and ask again.

Can you help with this problem?
