wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down -> Wireless Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4320] (rev 03) not working on HP Pavilion zd7000 (PB950EA#ABU) in Ubuntu 10.10

Asked by Peter T Haley

I cannot access the internet with Ubuntu 10.10 using my HP pavilion notebook model zd7145EA. This is apparently because Ubuntu 10.10 does not have the correct drivers for the Broadcom BCM94306MPSG wireless card.
This version of Linux does contain drivers for the Realtek card in my other Toshiba Laptop (newer model than the HP)

Does anyone know where I can find the appropriate drivers.

Can you give the output of:

sudo lshw -C network; sudo iwlist scan | grep 20; rfkill list

Use a wired connection to get fully updated too, as well as give the output of the command above.

Thanks

Hi,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word lsmod. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|usb|witch|wl'; iwconfig; cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|witch|wl'; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; cat /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state; sudo lsmod

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.

Regards,

Mark

Dear Mark
I am running Ubuntu 10 .10 from a CD as last time I tried a version
of Linux it was a long task to get rid of it and re-install windows Xp.
Does this make any difference to your advice?

You can only test wireless using the Ubuntu LiveCD if the wireless card is fully supported WITHOUT using closed-source firmware.

But in your case, your Broadcom wireless card requires the install of proprietary and non-free firmware. Ubuntu does not include proprietary firmware on the CD because of licensing issues.... You cannot test this on the LiveCD, because you need to REBOOT after installing the firmware. But after a reboot, the LiveCD will forget any changes that were made. So the LiveCD is of no use in this case.

So you first need to install Ubuntu to the harddisk before you can install the firmware, reboot and retest wireless....

Please enjoy your tea time ;-) One cup for you and one for the house...

Thanks Mark.
Your answer makes sense to me but do you know where to get the firmware? The
Broadcom website refers me back to the Manufacturer and they (Hewlett
Packard) no longer provide updates for the Laptop I would like to use for
Ubuntu 10.10 as the zd7145EA is now several years old.
Thanks for your efforts anyway as I am only trying Linux as an
intellectual exercise. At 74 I need to keep my brain active.

Please proceed with running the following Terminal commands:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter

b43-fwcutter exists in the Ubuntu repositories, but you will need a working wired Internet connection in Ubuntu in order to locate it and install it.

The only way to do that - in your case - is to connect the pc to the wireless router using a LAN cable, instead of using wireless.

After installing b43-fwcutter, reboot and retest wireless.
