Follow-up to question/135241 Wifi instability

Asked by jcglt

I add three interesting links to the former links (see question 135241) about this everlasting problem of Wifi instability, which finds its origin in the scanning every 2 minutes of the surrounding networks - to find a better one - launched by "network-manager".

          https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17471

          https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=513820

          http://nilvec.com/disable-scanning-in-n … omment-293

In addition to the replacement of "network-manager 0.8-0ubuntu3" by "0.8-0ubuntu3+volanin1" as written in "question 135241" I did the following today :
- right click on "network-manager" applet
- 1 left click on "Modify connexions"
- open "wireless tab"
- I left click on "modify" button for EACH network seen and UNCHECKED "Automatically connect".
Minuses : I have to manually launch the connexion at startup of computer - and if it needs to be relaunched
Pluses : "network-manager" does not decide any more to which network it will connect, I do it (and obviously I'll chose my networks, not my neighbour's even if the latter is stronger) - and this might inhibate this automatic scanning process ?

I know that this everlasting problem comes from :
- the kernel (common to all users)
- network-manager (also common to all)
- the multitude of wireless chips and their numerous drivers, all been not allways well supported.
However it is time for the developers of "network-manager" to propose a new version with a switch allowing the user (by checking a window for exemple) to ALLOW or PROHIBIT the scanning of surounding networks WHEN the computer is connected to a CHOSEN network.

we're not the developers of the kernel. we only help peole get their ubuntu system up and running and other issues that they may have with various programs. this is why you did not get a response to your prior question.

I fully understand your position.
Do you think it would be possible to upgrade in Ubuntu 10.04-1LTS "network-manager 0.8.0ubuntu3" to "network-manager 0.8.1" while solving all possible dependance conditions ?
According to the following page :

                                  http://live.gnome.org/NetworkManager/ReleaseProcess

this 0.8.1 incorporates this scan OFF-switching I'm looking for.

My problem of wifi instability came back.
I tried once more the 2.6.32.26 kernel : working but no real improvement.
I installed again wicd and uninstalled network-manager : same as before, disconnecting every 2 minutes and automatically reconnecting - exactly as months ago.

I eventually upgraded the kernel on my 10.04-1LTS system to the new <2.6.36.1-generic> and the wireles network connectivity seems to have largely improved with this new kernel, time will say if it's true.

Can you help with this problem?
