AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter [168c:001c] (rev 01) not working on Lenovo ThinkPad T500 2242CTO in Ubuntu 10.10

Asked by b49P23TIvg

wlan0 quit on reboot after most recent 10.10 update

I've tried rfkill unblock all
$ cat wlan.sh # with and without the commented lines
net=${1:-linksys_SES_59667}
echo Using arg1 net $net
# sudo ifconfig wlan0 down
# sudo dhclient -r wlan0
sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid "$net"
sudo iwconfig wlan0 mode Managed
sudo dhclient wlan0
$
$ tar xpf compat-wireless-2.6.tar # attempted to install this code

changed some configuration files....
Sometimes the network is up, sometimes down, sometimes the wlan0 transmit power is 20dBm.
My computer will no longer find the wireless networks.
Thank you,
Dave Lambert

Here's additional information other threads have suggested as useful, and this is the first time I've used it with a with a wired connection.

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word lsmod. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|usb|witch|wl'; iwconfig; cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|witch|wl'; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; cat /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state; sudo lsmod

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.

Step 4: Please also specify the exact model and make of your wireless adapter.

I do not know how to find the exact model and make of my wireless adapter. I suppose I could tear the computer apart and read the card? The computer is a Lenovo T500 purchased in April, 2009. These commands say

       description: Wireless interface
       product: AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter
       vendor: Atheros Communications Inc.

Thank you,
Dave.

Reading this, from your previous post:

: phy0: Wireless LAN
       Soft blocked: no
       Hard blocked: yes

Please verify you have switched off the wireless look for switcher on your hardware

I've disconnected the computer from the ethernet cable. Pressing the
wireless button does not change the hard blocked state. When given
the chance, emacs announces that <XF86WLAN> is undefined whereas emacs
doesn't seem to register a keystroke when changing brightness and
other functions.

Here I
$ ( big command without apt-get ) >& /tmp/a
$ # press WLAN button
$ ( big command without apt-get ) >& /tmp/b
$ diff /tmp/[ab]

Your clue is that if my circuits work, and if I can release both the hard and soft blocks, then my wireless might work?

I think that the real issue here is the following Terminal output that you sent us:

mac80211 275881 4 iwlagn,iwlcore,ath9k,ath5k
cfg80211 168363 6 iwlagn,iwlcore,ath9k,ath5k,ath,mac80211

So there are currently 3 different wireless drivers (iwlagn, ath9k and ath5k) active and loaded at the same time. This is causing a conflict between drivers.

In your case, I think you only need to keep the ath5k driver active.

I suggest running the following 2 commands to blacklist ath9k and iwlagn:

echo 'blacklist ath9k' | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

echo 'blacklist iwlagn' | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

After blacklisting the 2 drivers, please reboot and retest wireless.

If you still get the following output after rebooting:

0: phy0: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: yes

then your wireless card is still disabled by a hardware switch, a
special key combination (Fn-F2, etc...), by incorrect BIOS settings for
wireless, or a combination of these factors...

There might also be a BIOS option that allows you to have the wireless
functionality controlled "By application"

Search for the "by application" option in the BIOS and select it (if
possible)....

Also run the following 2 Terminal commands to try to change the rfkill
state of your wireless chipset:

rfkill unblock all

sudo rfkill unblock all

Baffled. I've gotten the state

lambertdw$ rfkill list
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: no

Wireless Networks
device not ready

Or wireless appears ready but the network is disabled.

Thank you all for your efforts,
Dave

I found an additional radio switch on the left front edge of the T500. Maybe someone mistook it for a lid opening switch? I had taken the computer apart to investigate replacing the wireless card when I found it.

Again, thank you.
Dave Lambert.

Thanks Mark Rijckenberg, that solved my question.
