how to connect to a windows 7 machine with remote desktop client or remote desktop viewer?

Asked by michael kay

I'm trying to connect to a windows 7 machine on my LAN using one of these two applications, but it isn't enabling me to. I can not understand how to even get it to ping any Windows machines, however I was able to previously using Windows. It is possible the IP addresses I have are incorrect, or no longer of use. The only connection I can establish using either application is to my machine I am on, which tends to have very amusing results.

I am VERY new to Ubuntu, having just installed it a few days ago, and am confused by it's differences in comparison to my familiar Windows Interfaces.

If you can decipher that jumbled mess of a question and offer any help, many cookies of thanks unto you.

To connect to Windows machine, you can install UltraVnc on Windows machine and use Ubuntu preinstalled tools for remote desktop.

Log into your router to determine the address of the windows machine. then try pinging that address. And yes install Team viewer from http://www.uvnc.com/ It is a simple program and it works very well on both windoze and Linux machines.

this is going to sound ridiculous at first.

I installed it (repeatedly), but because I'm not used to this interface yet, I can't find it. I've checked anywhere I can think of...

I currently feel like an idiot. -___-
