Thailand wireless connection?

G'day guys,

Today I visited Pantip Plaza (Thai geek heaven) to help a friend buy a laptop. After a look around he decided on a Samsung RF508-S01TH which came not with Windows 7 (spit on the floor and wash my mouth out) but with Ubuntu... however, when it came to trying to go online wireless we were told that it could not do so in Thailand?

Now I'm a MBP user so I'm limited in my knowledge of both Ubuntu and Windows and I have given serious thought to putting Ubuntu on my MBP but this is not about me... it's a call for help to keep my friend from using the unmentionable.

The thing is the guy in the shop did not seem to know what he was doing... and he tried to explain this in Thai. The point is I'm not convinced that Ubuntu would build an operating system which could not go on line with a wireless network in Thailand, or any other country for that matter.

However, I could not find any local wireless networks of any description when I attempted to help?

Can anybody please help?

Regards

Arthur,

Is the confusion here about 'wireless' connections?

Does the

- the laptop have a wireless card that will connect to a 'home' (local area) network ie usually cable broadband with a home router that broadcasts and receives wireless signals from the laptop card over short distances (20m or less);

OR

- the laptop has a 'mobile network' modem (usually an USB thing like a memory stick) ie that connects to a mobile phone network (for which you'd have a phone SIM card and some sort of account, maybe prepaid).

I'd be very surprised if both are not available in Thailand - The place has a fixed network telephone network and I've not had problems using a mobile there in the past.
