Connecting to internet with Ubuntu live install cd

Asked by Switching Maybe

So I'm using the "Try" version of ubuntu 10.10 desktop edition on my hp mini, but I can't connect to the internet. It brings up the activation for the internet, and allows me to install the wireless connection, but it always fails towards the end. Could this be because I'm using the "try" version, or is this a real issue?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm just in love with ubuntu!

You will need a wired connection to install the driver

The driver you need is on the internet. The system has some packages to make it know that you can use the driver app for some hardware and how to install it but ultimately you will need a web connection to get the files you need. You can connect an ethernet cable to the RJ45 port on the system and install the driver, then use the newly installed wireless to browse as you expect

If the wireless chip is a cheapo broadcom then you can use the files in the live environment and this doc shows how you can use the liveCD to install it, anything else will need a web connection

Does a wireless modem have a place to connect ethernet cable?

You should have an ethernet port on the side of your computer. Sorry if this sounds insulting but it looks like an oversized phone jack. Most Computers, laptops, desktops, netbooks, etc...have an ethernet jack. Plug in the cable from your Modem directly to your computers ethernet jack. This is a more steady and reliable connection than a wireless one. As actionparsnip said, you need the driver for your wireless adapter.

I know where the ethernet jack is located, but I asked if wireless modems have ethernet codes?

Ethernet codes? I don't follow. The only "code" you would need is the passphrase to access your router. But since your problem seems to be with your computers wireless adapter, plugging the computer in directly to your modem will bypass the wireless aspect of the connection altogether and allow Ubuntu access to the repositories to get a driver for all your devices.
