Shared internet connection (network bridge) Ubuntu 10.10

I wish I had saved or at least read the entire web-page before I tried the GUI method. If one follows the GUI instructions in part 1 (as I did) the network manager applet crashes; it cannot be used on a machine configured as a server. I found this out the hard way. Once the applet crashes you cannot connect with any device unless you know the command line given near the end of the page.

So now I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10, and also thanks to the late hour, my lack of attention and Ubuntu installer's proclivity to fine EVERY external drive before the HD, no back up files.
I did find out that the CD will install to a Seagate 1 TB external back up drive quite nicely. Maybe that will help someone else.

What I learned so far is that the stock network manager applet is not compatible with sharing a connection. It will crash, and unless you happen to know the command line pretty well, you will have to re-install Ubuntu. Also if you install from the CD it apparently wants to install onto ANY external drive before the Internal hard drive. Live CD happened to pick my drive that had my home folder, V-card for email contacts, etc, etc etc,

Having given up on windows, this will be a lesson learned for me: Buy a second wireless card; don't bother trying to configure a share. Too risky. Other people new to Ubuntu may well decide it is too risky/hard/whatever and stay with windows. What a shame.
