HP Pavilion DM3 Atheros WiFi Disabled

Asked by Simmo

I seem to have a similar problem to a fair few folks regarding wifi listed as disabled ... the thing with the DM3 is that the button on the side of the laptop enabled bluetooth and wifi .... Bluetooth enabled fine but wifi remains disabled at all times ... I've pasted the output from the command everyone gets asked to run in other posts below .. also when trying to just bring the interface up i get

simmo@Ulaptop:~$ sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
[sudo] password for simmo:
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not possible due to RF-kill

the other things i've been reading about was installing the windows driver but I havent done that yet, just wanted to see if anyone has got some ideas of bringing the wifi up

OUTPUT ----

simmo@Ulaptop:~$ sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|usb|witch|wl'; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; sudo lsmod; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

UPDATE:
I tried this
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/atheros-ar5007-wireless-with-madwifi-on-ubuntu-804-hardy-heron.html

and the commands completed successfully, but the wireless remains disabled ... but I reckon I've blacklisted the proper driver now :( ......

The following Terminal output (that you sent us) shows the issue that your wireless card is
having:

"

0: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: yes
 Hard blocked: no
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: yes
 Hard blocked: yes
2: hp-bluetooth: Bluetooth
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: no
3: hci0: Bluetooth
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: no

"

So your wireless card is currently disabled by a hardware switch, a
special key combination (Fn-F2, etc...), by incorrect BIOS settings for
wireless, or a combination of these factors...

It is also possible that you need to have the hardware wifi switch in the OFF position before turning on the PC. After the Ubuntu desktop has fully loaded, put the hardware wireless switch in the ON position and retest wireless. Keep checking the rfkill status using the following Terminal command:

rfkill list

There might also be a BIOS option that allows you to have the wireless
functionality controlled "By application"

Search for the "by application" option in the BIOS and select it (if
possible)....

Also run the following 2 Terminal commands to try to change the rfkill
state of your wireless chipset:

rfkill unblock all

sudo rfkill unblock all

Then retest wireless again.

Hey, Thanks so much, I thought it would be button related but those rfkill commands are very useful things ....

i'm connected thru wireless happily updating this post :)

Just as a closing comment, would that ndiswrapper stuff I did to try and fix this myself have any impact on what driver it is using or should i not worry about reversing those changes ....

thanks again

I will try these in a bit, as having a wireless button that only worked in Windows (and only with HP Crapware installed at that!) is extremely frustrating.

It would be good to see automatic detection of this issue. Hopefully ubuntu friendly will be a help for that :)
