Ubuntu 2.6.32-25-generic killed wired & wireless internet on Acer Aspire One

Asked by Donald Haselwood

After the latest update, 2.6.32-25-generic, I find that Ubuntu on my Acer Aspire One - 150-1635 now shows the internet as disabled. Both the wired and wireless still work fine with Win XP, and they worked fine before with Ubuntu, starting with 2.6.28-15 and surviving all the upgrades/updates until the last.

"Network Connections" looks OK for the wire and wireless.

I need some direction as where to where to start for trouble-shooting this.

Have you tried booting the latest Ubuntu version you have installed (Lucid) using a kernel from an older Ubuntu release ? I would recommend you try the latest non-Lucid kernel and see if that help. If yes then you've found a regression that would require you to fill a bug report.

So did you upgrade directly from kernel 2.6.28-15 to 2.6.32-25 ?

Did you upgrade using a clean install or did you use package manager / apt-get to get upgraded?

I used 'Update Manager' for all the updates and upgrades.

You have jumped from Jaunty:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty-updates/base/linux-image-2.6.28-15-generic

to Lucid:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/admin/linux-image-2.6.32-25-generic

This means you skipped Karmic, this is not advised or supported. The only way this can happen is if you mess with the packaging of your OS. Did you do this?

No, there was not a skip from 2.6.28-15 to 2.6.32-25.. Each
update/upgrade was done as they came available.

I don't know exactly how many update/upgrades that have been between
2.6.28-15 and 2.6.32-25. /boot shows the following, but there may have
been some removed:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3491312 2009-09-09 08:56
vmlinuz-2.6.28-15-generic
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3898528 2010-03-12 03:35
vmlinuz-2.6.31-20-generic
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4030048 2010-06-03 21:56
vmlinuz-2.6.32-22-generic
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4031552 2010-06-11 08:53
vmlinuz-2.6.32-23-generic
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4034976 2010-09-16 14:14
vmlinuz-2.6.32-24-generic
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4037088 2010-10-16 19:46
vmlinuz-2.6.32-25-generic

The wired and wireless internet was working fine up through 2.6.32-24.
After 2.6.32-25 update it now shows internet disabled.

Have you tried to reboot into the kernel 2.6.32-24 ? If that works it means it's a regression introduced by the latest kernel at that would need to be report as a bug against the Ubuntu kernel.

You can remove the old kernels using software centre if they are unnecessary

From what you are saying and the versions you are mentioning it definately sounds like you skipped a release.

I suggest you log a regression bug

I tried the previous update (which worked before) and that gives the
same result (internet disabled).

What would be the version number for the latest non-Lucid kernel. I'm
not familiar with the names v version numbers.

I think our msgs crossed.

Yes, I tried booting with 2.6.32-24. Gave the identical result. It
"feels like" something got removed between 2.6.32-24 and -25.

What about the kernel just before (2.6.32-23) ? If this used to work but
no longer does it means the problem is not with the kernel but somewhere
else in your setup.

Maybe if you elaborate a bit more about your problem I could help you
better.

* Do you still get an IP when using the wired connection ?
* What is the output of "ifconfig -a" ?
* What is the output of "route -n" ?
* What is in your file /etc/resolv.conf ? Can you ping one of the
nameserver listed ?
* Can you ping 8.8.8.8 ?

FYI: To learn about names versus versions take a look at
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/linux-image-generic

If you think the problem occurred around Oct. 30th then please take a
look a the files /var/log/apt/history.log /var/log/apt/history.log.1.gz
... to see what upgrade was applied around that date. Report your
findings in the bug report please.

The bug team has confirmed this regression.

Now, the question is, seeing that there's no internet connection, how can we download the fix when it's available?

I suppose it could be downloaded on one of my other computers and
tranferred to the netbook with a thumb drive.

it doesn't work that way.
looks like they haven't decided if it's an important issue or not.
i'm not impressed with that at all.

Could always use ngisgtk and the windows driver, or just stop on lucid, it's supported WAAAAY longer than maverick.

As with 'not impressed' I suggest you read your EULA.

nope. i am not using maverick. still on lucid.

we need to polish up actionparsnip command of the english language. several people have complained about it. ;-) :D

Being from England with Parents originally from England, I doubt that's going to happen :)

EULA states (in short), that the OS carrys no SLA or guarantee of the OS working or data integrity. Basically if it breaks you get both pieces.

We try to support as best we can. Have you tried a clean install then applying updates? You can test if this is ok using a USB stick or SD card. May be the way to go.

Last night I downloaded the latest, burned a CD, and booted it up on the netbook. Wire and wireless worked OK, so a clean install should work. A clean install means re-installing programs and all the other little details, all of which buns up a lot of time...

Can you help with this problem?
