Replaced router BT Voyager with a new one of same type, can't connect to it

Asked by dave rowell

I am trying to replace my router with a new one of the same type (BT Voyager). When I connect the new router using Ethernet cable, the DSL and Ethernet lights come on but the Internet light stays off and I can not get an internet connection. I have noticed that the Quick Start guide says that I have to uninstall any previously used routers. How do I do that? Is there something I am doing wrong?

Have you configured the router by putting in your username and password?

No, but don't I need an internet connection to do that? The instructions say browse to 192.168.1.1.

No you don't need an iInternet connection to do that. Open a Browser e.g. Firefox and input in the address bar: http://198.162.1.1

You should not be communicating with your Router. In Quick Setup/Easy Setup you will find places to put your username and password. My experience is that it should work from here. You may have to reboot to get it to work fully.

Is the router "brand new" or is it from somewhere else? If it has been used previously with WAP/WEP you maybe need to reset it by pressing the button on the back and holding it in for 30 seconds.
