Compaq Presario V5000 no wired or wireless connection. 10.04LTS

Asked by mickyblag

Hi
Installed Ubuntu 10.04 along side WinXP. Didn't expect WLAN to work but cannot download any drivers as the wired LAN is shown disconnected. connection works under windows and LAN lights are on router and on laptop beside cable connection. Have looked at previous solutions for WLAN problems on this laptop and ran script advised there. Any help greatly appreciated. Results below:

sudo aptitude update; sudo aptitude install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'ound|irmware|eth|ath|wl|ipw|b43|witch|ndiswrapper'; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

You need some firmware for your Broadcom 4318 wireless chip.
You have two choices for a set of firmware: 1)From Broadcom (extracted from their driver by b43_fwcutter) or
2)from www.ing.unibs.it/openfwwf the b43-open files.
The firmware gets put into /lib/firmware/b43 or .../b43-open
If both sets are present, the b43 will override and be used.
If you can get your wired connection to work, getting the Broadcom firmware is simply a matter of installing the b43_fwcutter package and accepting the download offer from the Broadcom site. This download will pick the appropriate driver to be the source of the firmware, and then the package install will run the cutter and make the /lib/firmware/b43... for you. If you cannot get the wired connection to work, from windows, you may download the b43_fwcutter package, and the appropriate driver from Broadcom or the wireless.kernel.org (see your error msgs). and do everything manually, Or, try the b43-open, which is claimed to for your chip. I run the b43-open on my 4306 and 4312 chips with no problems, but have no experience with the 4318.

Once the firmware is in place, you have a choice of drivers. The default driver Ubuntu uses, the b43 driver, should work as soon as you get the firmware (maybe disable/enable wireless with a R click on the network manager icon), or a reboot.
lsmod should show modules for ssb and b43, and not wl or ...sta.. After a clean install, things should just work with the firmware. If the b43 (open) driver has trouble with your chip, you may try the other broadcom drivers, but try the b43 first. The other drivers will start changing configurations to suppress the ssb and b43, and going back to the b43 will involve tracking down these configuration changes (blacklist in modprobe.d etc.) and removing them.
Good Luck
