bcm4401 on Ubuntu 10.10 won't connect

Asked by Isny

When using the latest kernel on Ubuntu 10.10, I cannot use my Acer Aspire 5610 with bcm4401 wireless to connect to my router. The wireless card appears to see the router (i.e. I can see all the ssids of the networks in the vicinity), but it just won't connect. It just keeps asking for the password over and over again. 2.6.32-25-generic works just fine (last 10.04 kernel, I believe).
In addition, the network manager icon doesn't appear on the taskbar (?) automatically, even though the wireless is turned on. If I power off the wireless (via the front switch), and then turn it on, the icon then appears. This is also not a problem in the latest 10.04 kernel.
I tried 'sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter', but this didn't appear to do anything. Should this have put the driver in the list of drivers in the 'additional drivers' menu?

Wrong driver specified.

I was confused between the wired and wireless networks. When I looked up the correct driver (iwl3945), I was able to get it to connect again.
