Managed to disable my wireless, not sure how to re-enable it.

Asked by Andrew Lakin

Went to this site:

Followed instructions in the howto for beginners, got the following result. The trouble is, I'm fairly certain I deactivated my wireless with a hardware button on my laptop, a Compaq Presario CQ50, but pressing that same button does not enable wireless again, though it is supposed to, or so I think. I am on 10.04 LTS and can connect via wire just fine, but my wireless went poof.

I am not sure how to enable wireless at this point. Issue began one day ago.

Full terminal output:

Hi,

Try typing <service network-manager start> into a Terminal without the <>

The output is:

start: Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.140" (uid=1001 pid=14048 comm="start) interface="com.ubuntu.Upstart0_6.Job" member="Start" error name="(unset)" requested_reply=0 destination="com.ubuntu.Upstart" (uid=0 pid=1 comm="/sbin/init"))

Does that help pinpoint the problem?

Silly question, but did you simply try to right click on the network icon and see if Wireless is enable? It was maybe disabled by your hardware switch but not re-enabled?

Yes. The 'Enable Wireless' part of the menu is greyed out, and I cannot click on it.

Same issue, did you get it resolved?

So all of these people to my right have had issues with this? Has anyone found a resolution?

Maybe worth a try: sometimes when you deactivate the wireless card using the hardware switch, you have to reactivate it in the bios if the system cannot reactivate it.

Can you help with this problem?
