3 mobile dongle ZTE MF112 does not register in network connections

Asked by Manjuvajra

I have been using a vodafone mobile connection dongle that has been working OK but only at slow speeds. I have changed to a 3 mobile dongle ZTE MF112 and although it works very well on a windows computer and on my net book with Ubuntu for netbooks it does not work on my Fujitsu Amilo Pi 2515 with Ubuntu 10.04. I have followed the suggested procedure of ejecting the disk that first appears and entered the details with the wizard but still no listing in the Network manager.

Also my vodafone mobile connect listing has also vanished so I can use neither dongle.

Can anyone help?

With thanks

What windows does or doesn't do is of no value, it is a different OS with different support

Boot and login to the OS without the device attatched, let the OS settle. launch a terminal and run:

lsusb

Then plug in the device, wait 10 seconds then run:

echo; lsusb; echo; dmesg | tail

Copy the whole output and paste it here as an update

Thanks

You should install the package "usb-modeswitch" via Synaptic of the Software Center and reconnect the stick.
If that does not help please run "dmesg" in the terminal and post the lines that have been added when you plug in the stick.

Sorry about that last post - it was a bit excessive.

Yes the device is detected as a USB storage so you will need usb-modeswitch

I do have usb-modeswitch installed!! I don't know why it doesn't do what it should.

If I eject the 'CD drive' manually and then run lsusb again I get the modem detected properly:

Bus 007 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 005 Device 002: ID 05b8:3112 Agiler, Inc.
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 19d2:0031 ONDA Communication S.p.A. ZTE MF636
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

but it still does not appear in the network manager!!.

I have rooted around and discovered that if I log on as root user and I run wvdial (after fiddling with the configuration file) I can get the modem to work properly. This means that I have to log on as root, plug in the dongle, eject the 'CD' drive, open a terminal and run wvdial - and then change to my normal user name. I also means have to manually set Evolution and Firefox online. Not very neat but it works.

I would prefer to use the network manager if I could find out what is going wrong. As I say my netbook is working fine exactly as it should.

Any thoughts?

Sorry for delay - I have been asleep.

Yes usb-modeswitch-data is installed.

Could it be something to do with the network manager program?

Its really very simple why it "doesn't do what it should". In windows the device is seen as a storage device and automagically installs the driver. It then gets switched over by the software to being a modem. He company has been short sighted and not accommodated your OS so you have to do the legwork yourself and switch the device manually. There is software available to you (which you are being advised on but I have zero use of it so am sitting to the side) to get the device thinking its a modem and not a storage device.

it appears that for this chip set

ID 19d2:0103 ONDA Communication S.p.A.

the usb-modeswitch-data is not up to par yet. other users apparently sorted out this by by modifying/adding new rules for ejecting the cd. so, give it a try and see how it goes. the url is below - #18

Thanks for your help - I will try modifying the usb-modeswitch-data rules. But for the next two weeks I will have no internet connection (off into Spanish mountains) will try again when I get back.

Can you help with this problem?
