wireless encryption needed

Asked by Lorenzo Zanon

Hi,
I need to encrypt my wireless connection, since who installed it for me (_years_ ago) left it free for anyone in the neighborhood.
I should get the IP address of my modem/router/? (box with the little antenna and lights) and then type it on the browser to access its configuration page, or am I wrong?
In any case I don't know how to get the right IP address and make it work...
Thanks for helping!!!

The router will give you the IP. If you run:

route

The IP address after the word 'default' is the routers IP. You can then access that in your browser and configure your router.

If you run:

route -n | grep 'UG[ \t]' | awk '{print $2}'

It should show it.

if you use firefox (most people do despite it being rubbish imho) you can run:

firefox `route -n | grep 'UG[ \t]' | awk '{print $2}'`

If you are connected via wireless you may be unable to 'manage' the router -- try using an Ethernet cable and then find the default gateway -- use that IP address to try and connect.

that would depend on your router --- usually there is a 'reset' button that requires a pen or paper clip to depress.

Lets first try just powering the router off and then turning it back on. That would 'reboot' the router w/o resetting it to base settings.

Can you help with this problem?
