Cannot enable wireless connection

I am a first time user of Ubuntu. I installed 10.4 on a Dell E6400, and I cannot get the wireless to work. It tells me to enable wireless. At first turning the switch off and on did nothing. I searched the forums and found an answer to something similar suggesting to go to system\administration\hardware drivers. This seemed to find some broadcom drivers for my wireless card. I activated them and restarted the computer. now when I turn the switch on or off the led indicator on the laptop lights up or off, but the network indicator tells me the wireless card is still disabled. When I first connected to the Hardware driver program it gave me 2 choices. I choose both, thinking that the most correct one would stay. After I restarted only the one that installed shows now.

I saw some instructions on launchpad in other posts where information was requested.

Use a wired connection and run:

sudo apt-get install wicd; sudo apt-get --purge remove network-manager network-manager-gnome

You can then reboot and use wicd. network manager seems to like wlan0, yours has picked up as eth1. Wicd is more flexible and will allow you to manage the interface.

This tells you how to enable Wifi without installing wicd, with the regular network manger, if you have made a fresh install and do NOT have access to a wired connection.
