internet connection is slow

Under windows xp my cable modem was somewhat fast. Under Ubuntu my connection is slow. Takes a long time to look up addresses and than to load the pages.

This could be a DNS issue; can you paste here the contents of

/etc/resolv.conf ?

I am not sure how comfortable you are in trying some extra packages. If this is indeed a DNS issue, you could use a DNS cache server that will really help in any case.
You can search for "dnsmasq" and "cache" on ubuntuforums.org for more info on this.

Yea mine too, I usually have a 54kb/s but now I have a 24kb/s you know its somewhat slow,
I just manage to make my wireless card to work bcm43xx, I dont know if that has anything to do --
