Ubuntu 10.10 Linksys WUSB54GC wireless USB adapter wireless adapter tx power

Asked by James Melichar

I just installed ubuntu 10.10-beta and have a Linksys WUSB54GC wireless USB adapter (rt2870). I am having a lot of trouble establishing a connection and keeping it. When it does connect, I get disconnected as soon as I try to use it. Also I will lose the connection after a short while if not immediately trying to browse the web. A peek at dmesg sometimes shows my AP not responding to a probe request and immediately deauthorizing me. I think (hope!) this may be because of the distance to my AP and the adapter not using full Tx power (12dBm, 15mW) as opposed to 27dBm as reported in PuppyLinux which works just fine. So does Win XP with the same hardware. iwconfig won't let me change the txpower on the fly - says operation not permitted. How can I change this? Is there a config file somewhere I can edit to make a specific txpower level or "auto" permanent?

Log a bug. Maverick is still in beta, is NOT ready and NOT complete. What did you expect....

My Linksys WUSB54GC won't connect either, even though it did connect under Ubuntu 10.04. When I query it with iwconfig, it shows a TX power of 14dBm, while the laptop (that can connect) sitting right beside my machine has a TX power of 20dBm.

Can you help with this problem?
