rtl819xE 0000:05:00.0: firmware: requesting RTL8192E/boot.img -> rtl819xE:Download Firmware: Put code fail! -> DISABLED Wireless Network controller [0280]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device [10ec:8192] (rev 01) not working on Samsung n150 in the 64-bit version of Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS

Asked by Calum Galleitch

Rough summary (full outputs below):

Running 10.04, fully updated. Driver is OK, interface exists under iwconfig and all that. iwconfig reported network disabled and NM reported "device not ready", so after some googling found this bug report and followed the steps in #2:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/508746

No effect; unsurprising because it seems that fix is already live anyway. More googling, found this (set of tools for Samsung netbooks):

http://www.voria.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=296

After adding the samsung-wireless package, everything looks good; iwconfig reports an interface, NM just says "disconnected".

However, I can't scan for networks, and I can't connect to my router (I have it set to open access at the moment to obviate any WEP oddities, though my main desktop (on 9.04) is connecting with the WEP default without any problems). iwlist wlan0 scan just says no scan results and attempting to connect with nm fails silently.

I'll attach the full test procedure output below.

EDIT: I should also add, wireless runs fine in Windows and scanning can see half a dozen networks from its current location.

You may have to compile the driver module. You could also try ndisgtk + windows driver.

I think your wireless card is experiencing this bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/508746

First install git-core using this command:

sudo apt-get install git-core

AFTER installing the git-core package, please try this workaround solution:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/508746/comments/2

Then reboot the pc and retest wireless.

If wireless is still not working after that procedure, the please follow these instructions to enable the lucid-proposed repository:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed

Then run the following commands to install the newest version of linux-firmware:

sudo aptitude update

sudo aptitude install linux-firmware

Then please reboot and retest wireless....

If that does not help, then I unfortunately have no more suggestions to make.

Very important: make sure to also read the following solution:

I quote:

    * Driver v14 from Realtek (1.6 MiB, application/x-tar)

I've read on this forum thread : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1239342&page=8 that Realtek sends by mail a driver compatible with 64bits to people who contact the support.

I mailed them today and Realtek (kidman) sends me the driver v14 which works on 64 bits (tested on kubuntu lucid). It facts, this is the same driver for 32 and 64 bits but older versions only work on 32 bits (prior to v13 I think as both v13 and v14 work on 64 bits).

On my Samsung R580 laptop, it disconnects often but it is usable. When it disconnects, sometimes, it can not reconnect automatically so I have to unload the module and reload it, then it works again for some time.

I've attached it.

Hope this help
"

So you will also need to compile and install the v14 Realtek driver (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware/+bug/508746/+attachment/1326241/+files/rtl8192e_linux_2.6.0014.0401.2010.tar.gz) , as it is certified to work with 64-bit editions of Ubuntu, while older Realtek driver versions are not.

Hi Mark,

Yes, I found that bug as well in my Google adventures. I've followed that and updated the newest linux-firmware from proposed - no joy. Bit frustrating as it seems like one of these situations that just requires a single line tweaked in a config file somewhere...but which one?!

Ah - just seen your latest reply. I glanced over that comment as it seemed to be 64bit only. I'll have another look.

This response posted via wireless.

My main problem here was not realising the N150 is a 64-bit animal. I feel quite silly now.

I'm just going to get WEP re-enabled and check it copes with reboots and so forth and then I'll come and close this down. Thanks for your help :)

No problem. The problem was not realising if the N150 is a 64-bit animal or not.... It was necessary to realize that you were running the 64-bit version of Ubuntu. However, you could just as well run the 32-bit edition of Ubuntu. So it is the operating system that determines which type of drivers to install, not so much the hardware....

Your Terminal output shows that you are running the 64 bit version of Ubuntu:

"Linux ubuntu 2.6.32-24-generic #43-Ubuntu SMP Thu Sep 16 14:58:24 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux"

Please set the thread status to solved if this issue is still solved.

Can you help with this problem?
