Lenovo box can't access wireless internet (Lucid 10.04)

Asked by Sarah McKenney

I have a Lenovo G460 with a new install of Lucid on half of it and Windows 7 on the other side, and have not been able to access wireless internet. LSHW reveals that the network is unclaimed. I have seen the troubleshoot page https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/WirelessTroubleShootingGuide but loading the Windows drivers leads to "Invalid Driver!" and "No Hardware" errors.

I copied the following command into the terminal:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|usb|witch|wl'; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; sudo lsmod; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Here is the output:

if you go to System-->Administration-->Hardware Drivers and open it do you see a new window that says something like ...'searching for hardware drivers'.... with a bullet running back and forth ?

The system actually acknowledges my hardware driver.Stating:

These package contains Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driverfor use with Broadcom's BCM4311-, BCM4312-, BCM4321-, andBCM4322-based hardware.

A Broadcom STA wireless driver--it also says at the bottom: "This driver is activated but not currently in use."

according to

http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/README.txt

.....'Ubuntu:
------
Go to System->Administration->Hardware Drivers
Choose the Broadcom STA wireless driver
Activate

Sometimes the driver does not show up in the Hardware Drivers choices. In
this case, try reintalling the driver from the GUI or shell like this:

From the GUI:
Package Manager (System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager). Click the
Reload button in the upper left corner of Synaptic to refresh your index then
search for and reinstall the package named bcmwl-kernel-source.

From the shell:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --reinstall install bcmwl-kernel-source

In either GUI or text case, after reinstalling, reboot your machine.

Now go back to System->Administration->Hardware Drivers
and you should see the driver enabled and working.'.......

please re-install the driver using commands as follows in a terminal

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --reinstall install bcmwl-kernel-source

After some processing, Hardware Drivers still says that the Broadcom STA wireless driver is activated, but not in use. Is there, perhaps, a different driver that I'm supposed to download?

Hardware Drivers has always shown the wireless driver, and said that it is activated--my only option is to remove it. The problem is that for some reason my OS doesn't see fit to use it.

Network Manager (at the top right corner of the screen) doesn't even recognize that there are wireless connections to be made. At some point yesterday I got it to acknowledge and scan for wireless services, and it even found the one for the house. However, even with the correct passphrase it never connected. Since then the wireless options have disappeared and only the Wired Network shows up.

Hi,

First you will need to UNINSTALL and BLACKLIST the ndiswrapper driver, because it is currently preventing the bcmwl-kernel-source driver from working correctly.

First run the following commands to remove ndiswrapper:

sudo modprobe -r ndiswrapper
sudo apt-get --purge remove ndiswrapper-utils
sudo rm -r /etc/ndiswrapper/
sudo rm -r /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper
sudo rm /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/net/ndiswrapper/ndiswrapper.ko

Then run the following command:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Then, using the gedit editor, ADD the following line to the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file:

blacklist ndiswrapper

Then you need to install the following Broadcom driver package using aptitude or Synaptic package manager: bcmwl-kernel-source

This will of course require a working wirED Internet connection in Ubuntu. (wired, not wireless)

For example: using the Terminal, you need to run the following commands to install bcmwl-kernel-source:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install bcmwl-kernel-source

Then reboot and retest wireless using Network Manager.

A similar explanation can be found at the end of this thread:

Mark

Mark,

Thank you so much for the solution! Something in the code made it have some issues getting rid of ndiswrapper, but after removing it manually through the package manager all was well (after a quick restart).

Thanks to all those who read through, and hopefully others with this problem will be able to find the solution quicker than I did. :)

~Sarah
