ok Therese, there is nothing wrong with the driver and the wlan0 interface.
wlan0 interface 'sees' 2 cells (Access Points) as follows
SSID Arie PC
SSID 2WIRE233
both cells have keys set. which one of the two above do you have access (are manager of) please ?
on the desktop upper panel on the right hand side of it, somewhere close to the sound applet there should be the networking applet. if you left click on it you should see the two SSID's above listed if wireless networks is enabled (see below).
if you right click on it you can enable wireless networks and can Edit Connections.... so, pls enable wireless if not done yet and open Edit Connections.....
- left click on the Wireless tab; click on Add button --> a new window opens; here on SSID box enter ONE of the two SSID above listed that you have access to/are manager of
- place check mark on Connect automatically
- select and make sure that Infrastructure is selected on Mode; MTU should be automatic; the other boxes leave empty
- left click Wireless security tab - if you press the down arrow of Security box a whole list of options will be listed; you MUST SELECT THE ONE that matches your router security (that was set on the ROUTER) - please make sure of this
- left click IPv4 Settings tab - Method box must show Automatic (DHCP) - make sure of this
- click Apply then OK/close
if the router is configured ok you should be able to connect. let me know how it goes. pls utmost care in Network conf above.

Therese, when the pc interface scanned for AP's it detected - see above
Arie PC
while the router is
AriePC
they are different - see it ? white spaces vs no white spaces; this thing MUST be corrected, doesn't matter which one is changed BUT they must be the same - on the router and on the the config file otherwise there is no connection possible.
secondly, it appears that you're quite conversant with the router (you can log in etc) , so just to recap, your ISP for sure gave you a user and password for the ROUTER conn'n to his network which should not be touched. then there is the router that MAY or MAY NOT have a password/encryption key set - this the key that must be entered into the interface config file exactly in terms of TYPE and VALUE.
so, what I would suggest, for the purpose of debugging (where is the conn'n problem on the router or on the pc side) is to temporarily remove any encryption keys on the router first as well as on the pc config file and see whther you're able to connect. needless to say that after these resettings done the they must be saved in the router config as well as in the pc interface file. in addition, after the save on the config file please reboot the pc and see whether a connection is obtained.
if yes then just reverse the procedure - set the encryption key on the router first then on the interface file and reboot.
btw, please verify the router configuration and check whether DHCP is enabled - it must be, and whether the MAC filter is set or not. if it set then please enter your wifi interface MAC (in your case it is 00:26:5e:54:db:77) on the MAC allowed list. both last 2 items v imp.

Hi Peter I Am using the AT&T USBConnect Lighting Laptopconnect card

got it Therese; it appears that ATT's USBConnect Lighting Laptopconnect card has
ID 1199:68a3 Sierra Wireless, Inc.
first, just to be sure, and better seen also by you, pls run
lsusb
command with the ATT's USBConnect Lighting Laptopconnect card inserted in a usb port and copy/paste output here. for sure it'll be there. this is a 3G modem that in ubuntu is recognized as a storage device. in order to make it work as a modem obviously it must be switched from a storage device to a modem. the 'tools' needed for this are 2 packages that are in lucid's repository that have to be installed first; here below are the commands
sudo apt-get install usb-modeswitch
sudo apt-get install usb-modeswitch-data
you can install them by using GUI synaptic if it is more convenient. after installation of the two packages above pls reboot pc. hopefully an icon will appear on the desktop; pls tell me if that's the case with this modem (for other #G modems it happens).
we'll continue after I see the output of lsusb cmd and answers to the questions.

ok, here we go about GUI synaptic
first, System-
second, synaptic opens; go to Search button and left click on it - new window opens
third, enter in our case
usb-modeswitch
let synaptic search its db , when finished on the left panel will be displayed the package that you searched for and on the right panel you'll see the two packages mentioned
usb-modeswitch
usb-modeswitch-data
pls highlight the first one usb-modeswitch and right click on it; select Mark for installation option then press on Apply button
accept the choice presented on the new window opened (in this case both packages are automatically selected for install)
then select OK and the install process begins; let it finish; when finished just close synaptic and reboot with ID 1199:68a3 Sierra Wireless, Inc. device plugged in.
btw, did you already install the 2 packages using CLI ? if yes, do you see an icon on the desktop pls ? if not (you prefer GUI method) pls let me know after the packages were installed. we'll continue after that. TU.

I couldn't find an answer to my post that reads
.....'did you highlight the
USB. FireWire an_her peripherals
as stated under your post and open it ? pls do that and tell me what do you see on the right panel under Device: ?',,,,
would you pls make sure that I could see it ? what I'm interested on is what entry is in the Device: on the right panel. TU,
ps, I'm not interested AT ALL on any ....'for some reason Pete I coundnt copy/paste the info for the Peripheral Devices:',,, I'm interested on WHAT'S UNDER Peripheral Devices as stated above and previously namely
USB. FireWire an_her peripherals

Therese, yes, you're absolutely right, under Peripheral Devices heading and part of it in v small letters there is USB. FireWire an_her peripherals as explanation what the heading contains; I just noticed that today when I opened it; the subheadings contain the devices not the heading. I'm sorry for the rant, pls accept my apologies; it was uncalled for and rude.
it appears that the AT&T USBConnect Lighting Laptopconnect card acts as a modem, it was switched already, your ....'and asked me for the password again thats the first time it has done this'.... or in other words it tried and connected to your ISP 3G network.
however, based on your initial/opening post ....'Ii have a comcast netgear router.'..... up to a certain point in this thread (before I was aware that we're dealing also with a 3G mobile wifi through the AT&T USBConnect Lighting Laptopconnect card) we made an interface config file based on it where connect automatically option was enabled. I'd recommend/pls do it, edit that config file by removing the check mark under that option or outright delete/remove the file; it may interfere with the the 3G mobile connection.

Hi Pete I never thought that u were being rude so no apologies r necessary, but I just need for u to b a lil patient with me if I have alot of ?'s cause I'm so new to this so when u tell me to do certain things that I dont know how to do I will asked u so i won't do anything wrong.
Now can u explain more on how to edit the config file by removing the check mark as stated above.
I really appreciate it.

ok, thanks. here we go re ...'edit the config file by removing the check mark as stated above.'...
it's basically the reverse of the procedure we used before when it was created. I'll cite below that procedure (you can find it above on past posts) except that this time we'll edit it
....'on the desktop upper panel on the right hand side of it, somewhere close to the sound applet there should be the networking applet. if you left click on it you should see the two SSID's above listed if wireless networks is enabled (see below).
if you right click on it you can enable wireless networks and can Edit Connections.... so, pls enable wireless if not done yet and open Edit Connections.....
- left click on the Wireless tab;'........
AT THIS POINT you should see the connection NAME that we created. HIGHLIGHT it and press Edit button on the right. a new window opens where you'll see one of the 2 SSID that were entered when conn'n created and just above there is a BOX with Connect automatically besides.
AT THIS POINT please UNCHECK Connect automatically box; after check mark removed
........(these are the steps required to create the connection - they were omitted because are not applicable)
.....'- click Apply then OK'.....
btw, what do you see when you left click on the desktop upper panel on the right hand side of it, somewhere close to the sound applet, on the networking applet. ?
Can you help with this problem?
Provide an answer of your own, or ask Therese Dones for more information if necessary.
