Wireless Network controller [0280]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device [10ec:8171] (rev 10) can successfully detect but cannot connect to wireless network using Compaq 320 in Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS -> using driver=rtl819xSE driverversion=0014.0115.2010

Asked by Forrest Brandt

I have just installed ubuntu on my Compaq 320, and the wireless is not picking up the signal. It works fine when I plug it in though. I am also running my dell which has unbuntu as well, and it is having no problems picking up a signal. Any ideas?

Hi,

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word restart. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|usb|witch|wl'; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; sudo lsmod; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.

Regards,

Mark

action,

It was bought in Thailand, and just says Compaq 320, even in the literature that came with the computer it did not give further detail, wierd I know.

On the serial number sticker on the bottom it goes as follows
Model: Delphi
Modal Number: d40

It came pre-installed with SuSe SLED 11 by Novell.

That is not the full output.

The correct command STARTS with sudo and ENDS with the word restart.

The command you used was not the command I posted here.

Here it is one more time:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|usb|witch|wl'; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; sudo lsmod; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Please try the solution from Roger Liang at HP at the bottom of the following page:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-nettool/+question/120453

You can get the RTL8192SE driver

rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0017.0705.2010.tar.gz

from the Realtek site at the following URL:

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=48&PFid=48&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false&Downloads=true#RTL8192SE
