How can I boot Ubuntu (or Pup) from a flash drive?

Asked by soulflame

Full story: I used Unetbootin to install pup, but I can't get it to boot frim the flash drive in my BIOS. The choices are USB-fdd, USB-zip, and USB-cd as far as I can remember. Pressing F8 only gives me the option to boot from USB-zip, whatever that is, and it doesn't work but rather takes me to the grub boot menu where I can decide to boot from Ubuntu 10.04 or Windows XP. I'm getting rather frustrated by this, what am I doing wrong?

Also, I wouldn't mind booting into Ubuntu 10.04 from flash drive instead. It's an Either/Or.

If none of the USB options work then your hardware simply cannot boot USB. You can however boot. You can use this to use a floppy to boot a USB device:

Or you can use supergrub to boot a CD to then boot the USB

Why does my BIOS have those options if they're not supported? (I don't have a floppy drive anyway)
Thank you for the suggestion; what is supergrub and how do I use this?

Its a 3rd party bootable CD. It can be used to boot USB devices. Your hardware doesn't support booting from USB sticks as you have seen. There may be a BIOS upgrade to add the functionality but be EXTREMELY careful as if you do it wrong, you may brick your system.
