AirLink AWLL6077v2 USB Wireless 'N' - Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0bda:8174 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. - wlan0: ethernet device 00:21:2f:2e:84:3e using NDIS driver: net8192su, version: 0x1, NDIS version: 0x500, vendor: 'Realtek RTL8192S Wireless LAN USB NIC ', 0BDA:8174.F.conf - wireless card only works WITHOUT encryption, using ndiswrapper and Windows 2000 or XP Wireless drivers in the 32 bit version of Ubuntu 10.04

Asked by Pete Higgins

I am trying to use an Air Link AWLL6077v2 wireless 'N' USB adapter with UBUNTU 10.04 64 Bit on my i7 860 computer. The adapter appears to have an Ralink RTL8192U chip set. It works with Windows 2k, XP & 7 with the latest drivers. I have tried installing all of the various OS/32 & 64 drivers under ndisgtk but even that doesn't work. (However, most show the “Device Present -Yes” but I can't see any wireless networks) I can plug in different card models (both PCI & USB) and see wireless networks from UBUNTU.

Has anybody been able to get UBUNTU 10.04 to recognize an Ralink RTL8192U chip set wireless USB adapter?

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word restart. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'ound|irmware|eth|ath|wl|ipw|rtl|rt2|b43|witch|ndiswrapper'; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; sudo lsmod; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.

Step 4: Please also specify the exact model and make of your wireless USB adapter (if known) on this thread

Hi Pete,

Marco has twice given you the commands to copy-paste.

The commands are on this thread:

I did a fresh install of UBUNTU 10.04 with both an Ethernet cable and the AWLL6077v2 USB adapter plugged in. I installed the latest NVIDIA drivers and restarted. Next, I installed all 243 updates to make the system current and restarted. I finally figured out that you wanted me to highlight the 6th paragraph in the on-line reply and use the "Tip:" to copy it into Terminal. Sorry your meaning wasn't clear to me at first.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide,

Pete

Listed below is the output you requested:

First, please try this procedure:

http://mnshankar.wordpress.com/2010/05/08/ubuntu-10-04-lucid-lynx-on-my-optiplex-gx260/

If that does not work, please try this one:

http://samiux.blogspot.com/2010/05/howto-realtek-8192su-usb-dongle.html

If that does not work, please try the procedure from forumuser chili555 at the following location:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9425029

That last procedure involves using ndiswrapper.

Hope it helps....

I was trying to use an Air Link AWLL6077v2 wireless 'N' USB adapter with UBUNTU 10.04 64 Bit on my i7 860 computer. You suggested:

This did not work for 32 or 64 Bit installs. Suspect the operating system didn't know where to look, but did what was in the instructions.

Tried to follow this procedure, but kept getting file not found errors. I will need to learn how to compile a new kernel under UBUNTU to be successful at this.

That last procedure involves using ndiswrapper.

I had already tried using ndiswrapper under UBUNTU 10.04 64 Bit and couldn't see any wireless networks.
I installed UBUNTU 10.04 32 Bit and NDISGTK. Tried both the 32 Bit XP and W2k drivers. Both worked and I could see my network. Neither would connect with 128 Bit WEP enabled. Both drivers connected and worked with WEP disabled.
****************************************************************************
The following output shows the result you originally asked for; with the AWLL6077v2 wireless adapter connected, W2k driver installed and WEP disabled. Perhaps the information will help somebody else.

Thanks for trying to help me. I read in one of the posts that UBUNTU 10.10 is expected to support the RTL8192 chip set, so hopefully it will work for both 32 & 64 Bit versions of the OS.

Disconnected wired network, even unplugged the cable. Sending this reply via the Air Link AWLL6077v2 wireless 'N' USB adapter. The Connection Information dialog box even shows Speed: 300 Mb/s.

To use this adapter safely, I would need to be able to re-enable WEP, and to take advantage of 8 Gigs of memory I need to get it working with 64 Bit UBUNTU so if you discover any additional information, I would appreciate you sending it my way.

I just retired last week, so I have plenty of time to try different ideas. Most of the things I have gotten working have been through reading posts like this.

Again, thanks for all the information.

Sincerely,

Pete
