Internets Dongle's 'Setup.exe' will not run!

Asked by Ian Cowan

Internet Dongle (USB modem) needs to install its software to work - but I can't run setup.exe.

So I downloaded WINE and its updates but still setup.exe doesn't run!

Then I find this guide:
http://jorgenmodin.net/index_html/archive/2008/08/14/how-to-get-orange-uks-internet-everywhere-to-work-on-linux-ubuntu-804-with-option-modem

Which links to this guide:
http://www.pharscape.org/HSOconnect-Ubuntu-8.04.html?searched=orange+internet&advsearch=oneword&highlight=ajaxSearch_highlight+ajaxSearch_highlight1+ajaxSearch_highlight2

I follow the instructions by downloading the two files and then I proceed to type in the commands - but the commands are not recognised!

paul@r60-ubuntu:~$cd ~/Desktop
paul@r60-ubuntu:~/Desktop$ tar zxf hso-1.2.tar.gz
paul@r60-ubuntu:~/Desktop$ cd hso
paul@r60-ubuntu:~/Desktop/hso$ make
paul@r60-ubuntu:~/Desktop/hso$ sudo make install

I realise the first part is the guys userID so I only copy what comes after. The first line is accepted. Everything after that is not.

Any help?

The setup file you have is for windows. Ubuntu isn't windows, it is Linux so the CD is of no value to you at all.

Can you have the device attatched and give the output of:

lsusb

Thanks

As actionparsnip has pointed out, that setup.exe is for Windows. Fortunately, while Windows needs it installed, Ubuntu doesn't. In my experience, Orange dongles usually just need to added as an available Network Connection.

Start by going to System > Preferences > Network Connections, then click on the Mobile Broadband tab.
Clicking the Add button will then start the "Set up a Mobile Broadband Connection" wizard. It's only a few pages long, asking you to select your country, provider (Orange), and account type (pay monthly, etc.).
Once that's set up and appears in the Network Connections list, you should be able to click the Network Manager applet up in the top right of your screen, and then select your Mobile Broadband connection towards the bottom of that list. Wait a few seconds and the internet connection will be established.

That should probably save you from the terminal but, if it doesn't get you online, then open one (Applications > Accessories > Terminal), type:
lsusb
paste the output into your reply, and let actionparsnip guide you from there.

Thanks for offering help.

There is no program called 'Network Connections' in System > Preferences, or anywhere else.
