wusb100 Version 1 on Karmic 9.10 desktop amd64
This is a shot in the dark, because I've looked EVERYWHERE and cannot find the solution to my problem!
I have a Compaq Presario V6000 and I'm trying to get a wifi adapter (Linksys wusb100 "version 1") to work on it. Quick specs:
Amd64
Karmic Ubuntu 9.10
Nvidia Xorg
I'm not really sure where to start
here is lsusb:
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 1737:0070 Linksys
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0bb4:0ff9 High Tech Computer Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
So the driver is identifying the adapter, but the adapter is not letting me connect to my wireless router, although the adapter does recognize the router (with a great signal).
What do I need to change here. I tried to blacklist the RT2870 driver, but that did nothing. I was thinking that there might be perhaps a different driver being used for the Linksys 1737:0070 (version 1) than there was for the 1737:0078 (version 2)?
Is anyone willing to slay this problem and help a medical student go mobile with his customized 9.10 ubuntu??
If you have any ideas or want to help me figure it out, let me know!! I need my laptop to work in 2 weeks before my last two years of school start!
Thanks in advance,
K

Step 1.
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source
Step 2.
Under the desktop menu System > Administration > Hardware Drivers, the drivers can be activated for use.
Note: A computer restart may be required before using the wifi card.
See if that helps

bcmwl-kernel-source
is now updated...
but when I go to Hardware Drivers, it only gives me 3 nvidia drivers to work with...
I restarted after the install, but nothing changed.

Hi,
Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).
In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:
Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications-
Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https:/
Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/
Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.
Regards,
Mark

okay, so for some reason, launchpad won't let me paste and send a message this large. It's over 400k but under 1mb... I saved the output to a text file, but I don't know how to send it to you.

Use it in IRC to paste multilpe lines so you don't spam the channel. There is a command line app for it called:
pastebinit
which you can install. You can then use things like:
pastebinit /etc/hosts
It will make a URL which you can then provide to people in IM / IRC / wherever so they can see the paste

Do you >need< me to install that? I forgot to mention that I added a marked off part in the text where the timeout kept on occurring. In this section, the numbers that look like this-> [55984.812556] Systematically appeared in different combinations ascending in number each time this appeared->
"[55984.
[55985.010075] wlan0: authentication with AP 00:26:50:92:6b:91 timed out
[55991.082842] wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:26:50:92:6b:91
[55991.282590] wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:26:50:92:6b:91
[55991.482568] wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:26:50:92:6b:91"
then it just repeated over and over hundreds of times ascending in number XXXXX.XXXXXX
So that's the part I left out, if you still feel like you need a copy of the rest of it, let me know. I'll let you look at it now, and stop bothering you constantly. Let me know what you think

I believe the following output shows the real issue that your wireless card is having:
Driver Info #0:
Driver Status: rt2800usb is active
Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe rt2800usb"
Driver Info #1:
Driver Status: rt2870sta is active
Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe rt2870sta"
Config Status: cfg=new, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown
Attached to: #39 (Hub)
So there are 2 different wireless drivers - rt2800usb and rt2870sta - active and loaded at the same time for your wireless USB adapter. Only one of them should be active, not two.
Please open a Terminal and run the following command:
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.
Inside the gedit editor, scroll down and add the following 3 lines at the end of the /etc/modprobe.
blacklist RT2800USB
blacklist rt2800USB
blacklist rt2x00usb
Save the change to the /etc/modprobe.

Okay, I added the 3 lines, saved, rebooted but still am at the same problem. I looked everywhere for the correct RaLink drivers to use for this exact model, and I didn't know if maybe you knew better than I if we are using the correct driver. I didn't want to go the ndiswrapper route, because it seems very complicated and time consuming. Everywhere I've read has the RT2870 or RT2870sta
But then again I'm not uber hax so much, so I might not have been looking in the right place or whathaveyou
This deal is becoming a huge pain, and I've even researched which wifi adapters are compatible with my rig hoping that someone has my exact rig and what wifi adapters are they using,

Can you tell if the adapter is connecting to a Mac address or 801. .. ? That might help me solve the problem between the router and computer.
Can you help with this problem?
Provide an answer of your own, or ask Kevin Claypool for more information if necessary.
