Wireless Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g [14e4:4315] (rev 01) not working correctly on Dell Inspiron 1564, even when using the bcmwl-kernel-source driver in Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS

Asked by Salik Mahmud

Hello!!

Installed Ubuntu 10.04 and Ran Update Manager. The Wireless Driver is Installed and Active Yet Wireless Network is Disabled

I am Using Ubuntu10.04 on Dell Inspiron 1564. Soon after Installation I used The Update manager to update. After that I was Given a Message of Driver Available i.e. Proprietary Driver for my Wifi Card. I installed it it then Gave me a message to restart and so I restarted.

Now The Driver is installed and Active but Wireless Network is disabled. The installed Proprietary Driver is The package that contains Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driverfor use with Broadcom's BCM4311-, BCM4312-, BCM4321-, andBCM4322-based hardware.

I have also Tried Installing Windows Driver But It Did not help either and Since last night I have made three clean re-installations but its not helping anyway.

Previously I had a Problem that The Driver installed and active but had to be re installed after restart to make it work it was when the Linux Generic Kernel Image was version 2.6.32.22 and After many attempts Mr. Mark Rijckenberg on Launchpad advised me a reinstall and it was fixed after reinstall then came Kernel 2.6.32.23 and my Wifi Kept working Fine but now I see something is wrong either in new kernel i.e. 2.6.32.24 or in some new updates that now the Wireless Card is installed and active but wireless network is disabled and not even working on previous Linux Kernel 2.6.32.22 or 23.

For Detailed Hardware Configuration I am posting here a result of One Command that Mr. mark Previously Gave me to get the info.

The Relevant commands and its result (at this time) is as under while connected via LAN cable to my Network Router instead of Through Wi-fi.

sudo aptitude update; sudo aptitude install hwinfo grep; sudo aptitude remove ndiswrapper; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/modules; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'ound|irmware|eth|ath|wl|ipw|b43|witch'; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart[sudo] password for salikmahmud: ; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'ound|irmware|eth|athSorry, try again.'; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.[sudo] password for salikmahmud:

The Above Report also shows in some lines as if the Blue tooth & Wireless is Hard blocked while it is not. I have checked and double checked the F2 Function key and its switched on and working on Windows7 on another partition(installed as dual boot and Ubuntu installed via wubi)

Hi Salik,

I was having the same issue in my Compaq laptop, which was showing Network disabled. Then I found that it can be enabled by doing right click on network-manager icon on task pane and then click on "enable Network".
I hope this will help you. Let me know if this doesnt work.

The Terminal output you sent us, shows that your wireless card is currently disabled by a hardware killswitch, which could be the Fn-F2 key combination or a hardware button on the side, front or bottom of your PC. Also check if wireless is currently disabled in the BIOS.

The following output shows this:

0: dell-wifi: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: yes

Also try running the following command to see if it helps change the "hard blocked" status from yes to no:

sudo rmmod dell_laptop

If this is a functioning workaround for your pc, then your wireless card is experiencing the following bugs:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/523143

and

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=544319

@Alpesh Thanks for your Reply But the Problem is that when it happens the Option of Enable Wireless Gets Disabled :)

Hi! Mark, Thanks for Being Here again, While Making this post I had a Wish if I could get in contact with you and here you are. I am gradually learning linux by your help and have been able to help quite a number of friends too who installed Ubuntu on my advise, so its really nice of you.

The Command that you gave me in previous problem as I mentioned before, I ran it two more times after making this post and installed "Wicd" from software center (it was advised by you to a friend of mine having issues with his laptop Acer Aspire 640z)

After this the Wireless Network is Enabled and detecting my Network but giving me an error of Password again and again while I am giving the correct password. I also checked BIOS and the F2 Key for Wireless Hard Block. There is no such thing found. and as I said its now enabled and is also working in Windows7 without any issues.

Current status is that the Wireless Network is enabled and detecting my Network but not authenticating the password and I can not opt to remove password as it is given by my Network Provider and its mandatory to enter a password in WPA / WPA2 Security Mode.

Its now giving same problem whether I use Network Manager or Wicd.

I just used sudo lshw on terminal a moment ago and posting its result here if it may help,

 sudo lshw

Only thing left for me to suggest is the following:

Shut down the laptop. Remove the powercord. Remove the laptop battery.

Reconnect the powercord to the laptop. Boot into the BIOS.

In the BIOS settings, choose the option "Load default values", then save and exit the BIOS.

Then retest wireless in Ubuntu.

This suggestion comes from a thread where a similar issue occurred:

http://ubuntu-ky.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1010751&page=4

If that does not help, I am out of idea's....

Thanks a Lot Mark infact rest assure you are never out of ideas:) THIS ONE HELPED. I just did as you mentioned in this last post and removed the wicd (thinking it may have been causing some conflict with Default network manager) then ran once again command given by you that I mentioned in my first post (the very long one) and then once again restarted and Thanks to God & You I am now Connected via wi-fi :)

I really appreciate your help and always will. Although sometimes I think you might be fed up of me coming up with new issues every day yet you do help whenever my Wi-Fi is stuck.

Thanks again, My Issue Finally resolved

To Help Future readers of this Post I would like to mention in sequence or more logical way what I did to resolve with the help of all procedures I have learned from you till date.

1. Installed Wicd from ubuntu software center. It helped to Confirm that Wireless was Not hard OFF as it showed my network which meant the Wireless card was ON (or probably wicd helped to wake up the wireless network which was sleeping for some reason)

2. Ran the command in terminal for several times : sudo aptitude update; sudo aptitude install hwinfo grep; sudo aptitude remove ndiswrapper; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/modules; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'ound|irmware|eth|ath|wl|ipw|b43|witch'; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

3. Typed sudo lshw in Terminal to verify the status of all hardware

4. Removed Wicd and Ran the command mentioned in # 2 Above, Once again

5. Shut down the laptop, removed power cord and battery, set System BIOS to Defaults on a restart and restarted Ubuntu

Finally its Working without a trouble yet :)

Best Regards

You are not only a Ubuntu Expert but also a very Good Teacher with great deal of Patience for Linux Learners like me :)
Your teaching is also helping me to help many friends rapidly switching to Ubuntu and when they see the way you respond to queries they are encouraged and assume that lets install and no matter if we are not a Linux Expert; when something goes wrong people will help on community. Thats the best thing I know about Open Source Community along with other benefits already known.

God Bless You
