Wireless connection frequently drops [deauthenticating by local choice (reason=3)]
Hi guys,
Ever since I installed 10.04 I've been having problems connecting to my wireless network. At first I was getting "Error: Bad password" and after some tinkering now I get "Error: Could not contact wireless access point".
Can someone help, please?

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:
Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications-
Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https:/
Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!
sudo aptitude update; sudo aptitude install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/
Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.
Step 4: Please also specify the exact model and make of your PC (if known) on this thread

I believe that your wireless card is experiencing the following bug:
https:/
Please try the suggestions in that bugreport.

It is possible that you will need to reinstall Ubuntu 10.04 from a LiveCD session and then execute this workaround :
https:/
That is how a similar issue was solved. See the following thread for details:

Hi Mark,
Before I re-install Ubuntu I wanted to try your first suggestion. Here I copied your suggestion from bug/548992 which I need additional help with. How and where do I disable encryption, enable SSID, change channels and of course how do I make sure access point is not hidden (that seems to be my main problem)? Sorry for being so lay, but I really am not even close to being a hacker, so, please, be patient.
Thank you again.
"Connect to your wireless router using a wired connection.
Temporarily disable encryption and enable SSID broadcasting. Make sure the access point is NOT hidden. Change the wireless transmission channel to channel 3 to avoid interference. Make sure the SSID broadcast name is a simple name, WITHOUT any special characters in it....
Then retest the wireless connection."

The following link explains how to connect to a wireless router:
http://
You will need to use a WIRED network connection to your wireless router to be able to perform administration tasks on it.
Normally, you should be able to disable encryption, change wireless channels and enable SSID broadcasting (and unhiding the router) via the web-based administration interface....
P.S. I am not a hacker either.

Well, I tried. I connected to my router, but could not perform any of those tasks. It's interface seems to be not very user_of_my_kind friendly:):):)
Unless you can come up with something else, I'm afraid I'll have to re-install. If I do that will I loose my data? And does re-installation have to be done from a CD? Couldn't it be done by re-upgrading through update manager (like I did originally)?
Don't laugh, please.
Thank you very much.

If your personal data is important and you do not want to lose it, make a backup to an external backup medium before reinstalling.
Best way to reinstall Ubuntu is from a LiveCD session. But that's is just my personal opinion.

Mark,
I downloaded Ubuntu, created a CD, rebooted the system and nothing happened. What are procedures for reinstalling the system, if you don't mind?
Thank you for all your help.

Did you execute the following workaround, as I suggested before?
https:/
If you need an explanation on how to install Ubuntu, please create a separate thread for that using this link:
https:/
That new question is totally unrelated to the original question in this thread...

I simply re-installed the whole system. There was no need for any workaround. Everything functions fine now.
Thank you.
