eeepc_laptop: wlan hotplug disabled -> UNCLAIMED Wireless Network controller [0280]: Atheros Communications Inc. Device [168c:002c] (rev 01) : chipset requires compat-wireless ath9k driver that works on Asus Eee PC 1005PE in Ubuntu 9.10, but NOT in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

Asked by ilhan pishgah

Hi,

I bought a new Asus Eee pc 1005PE , i have another laptop and i been using Ubuntu on it and wireless card worked perfectly since day i installed Ubuntu. Im very new with Linux, tried and search for past couple of days to fix the wireless card but didnt find any answer to solve the problem. I can connect to internet only through cable. there is no wireless card recognized by Ubuntu.

current version i installed is 10.4 , i read in some forums that 9.10 had no problem. Im trying to download that version and give it a try but still it would be great if I learn how to fix this problem.

thanks

Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word restart. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!

sudo aptitude update; sudo aptitude install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'ound|irmware|eth|ath|wl|ipw|b43|witch|ndiswrapper'; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.

I suggest following this procedure:

If it does not help, I suggest reverting to Ubuntu 9.10 while they try to fix the bug in 10.04.....

Even by installing the Ubuntu 9.10 problem resist. when the installation finish there is no wireless card known by OS.
The following method i used for 10.4 and i couldnt fix the wireless but it successfully fixed the problem with my wireless card in Ubuntu 9.10

http://wireless.kernel.org/download/compat-wireless-2.6/compat-wireless-2010-02-13.tar.bz2
tar -xf compat-wireless-2010-02-13.tar.bz2
cd compat-wireless-2010-02-13
