sudo modprobe ath5k

You may need to blacklist ath5k_pci

This problem was never solved. I was able to download the NetGear Software onto an MS-Windows Vista 32 bit computer. and then I picked out the driver file and installed that onto my Ubuntu HP Laptop. The computer test shows the device to be installed.
However as far as a wireless hook-up it has not worked.

That sounds very baaad.
we`ve managed to get the driver from netgear but it`s obviously just for windows. Thanks for getting back to me

I suggest you read ytouEULA jackass.

Can you give the output of:

sudo lshw -C network

What windows does or doesn't do is of no consequence, it is a seperate OS with seperate support. Netgear also do NOT make wireless chips, they buy them in and make adapters so telling usits a "netgear" means next to nothing.
