I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 TLS and my WLAN has stopped working.

Asked by Faizal Moidu

I have upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 TLS from 9.10 and wireless connection is not working. A iwconfig or iwlist scan does list my SSID for the router listed. So I guess there is not issue with the WLAN USB adaptor from Dell( Dell Wireless 1450 Wireless USB Adapter ).

so you think that a problem can come from dell wireless and not from ubuntu ?
send an e-mail to dell-assistance or update your drivers-wireless on the site-dell.

I do not think there is a problem with dell wireless for two reasons
1. I dual boot with windows xp. The dell usb wlan adapter works great with it.
2. I face this issue immediately after upgrading to 10.04.

Googling showed similar problems for several others. So thought it might be a known issue.

Hi,

Please first connect the wired network card of your Acer Aspire 1640z laptop to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word restart. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!

sudo aptitude update; sudo aptitude install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'ound|irmware|eth|ath|wl|ipw|b43|witch|ndiswrapper'; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.

Regards,

Mark

I copy-pasted my request for information from a different thread. Please ignore the reference to the Acer Aspire 1640z laptop. ;-)

Please send the requested output :-)

I think the output shows the issues that your wireless card are having.

First issue: The /etc/network/interfaces file seems to have incorrect contents. It should ONLY contain the following 2 lines:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

Because the file contains MORE than those 2 lines, the following error occurs:

ifdown: couldn't read interfaces file "/etc/network/interfaces"
/etc/network/interfaces:1: misplaced option

The NetworkManager (and NOT /etc/network/interfaces) should handle your wireless connection, including all the encryption setting details.....

Second issue: There is wireless interference between the "NewSoul" and the "Arcor-597222" wireless access points. Both access points are transmitting on the same channel, channel 9. You should change the wireless channel to channel 3 or channel 7 to avoid wireless interference.

Third issue: Your wireless access point "NewSoul" has encryption enabled. But the output you sent us, shows the following error:

"ndiswrapper (iw_set_auth:1602): invalid cmd 12"

This ndiswrapper driver error means that - at least in Ubuntu 10.04 - your ndiswrapper driver does not support the encryption that is being used by your wireless access point. So to simplify this issue and the wireless setup, you need to temporarily DISABLE encryption on the wireless router.

After fixing the 3 issues, please retry access your wireless access point using NetworkManager.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Faizal Moidu for more information if necessary.
