Can't get dell wireless 1500 wireless card to work in Ubuntu 10.04
I have googled and searched forums and can't seem to get my Dell wireless 1500 wireless card (Broadcom) to work. I've followed all the steps and can get to the point where the driver seems to be acknowledged. When I type the following into the terminal: ndiswrapper -l
I get:
WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.
bcmwl5 : driver installed
device (14E4:4328) present (alternate driver: ssb)
But after putting in: sudo depmod -a
and: sudo modprobe ndiswrapper
into terminal. The commands: ifconfig and iwconfig result in no WAN0 being found. And I can't locate wireless networks. I have tried the bcmwl5.ini and bcmwl6.ini drivers that dell/broadcom recommend.
Any help would be appreciated!

for dell, you must go to the dell-site and not to google; and choose the drivers-update.

Hi,
Please first connect the wired network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).
In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:
Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications-
Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https:/
Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!
sudo aptitude update; sudo aptitude install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/
Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.
Step 4: Please also specify the exact model and make of PC that you are using (if known)
Regards,
Mark

Hi Rob,
The following output seems to indicate that the ssb driver module used by your b44 WIRED ethernet driver is preventing your wireLESS card from using the right driver:
Vendor: pci 0x14e4 "Broadcom"
Device: pci 0x4328 "BCM4328 802.11a/b/g/n"
SubVendor: pci 0x1028 "Dell"
SubDevice: pci 0x0009 "Wireless 1500 Draft 802.11n WLAN Mini-Card"
Revision: 0x01
Driver: "b43-pci-bridge"
Driver Modules: "ssb"
Memory Range: 0xecffc000-
Memory Range: 0xe0000000-
IRQ: 17 (175133 events)
Module Alias: "pci:v000014E4d
Driver Info #0:
Driver Status: ssb is active
This looks similar to this bugreport:
https:/
The ugly workaround "solution" is to disable your wired ethernet driver (by blacklisting b44 and ssb) OR to make sure Ubuntu successfully loads the b43 driver (wireless Broadcom driver) before loading ssb and b44 (wired ethernet driver).
A better solution is probably this:
Install the following Broadcom driver package using aptitude or Synaptic package manager: bcmwl-kernel-source
This will of course require a working wirED Internet connection in Ubuntu. (wired, not wireless)
For example: using the Terminal, you need to run the following commands to install bcmwl-kernel-
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install bcmwl-kernel-source
To enable the bcml-kernel-source (wl) driver, you will also need to UNINSTALL ndiswrapper using this command:
sudo aptitude remove ndiswrapper
Then blacklist ndiswrapper using the gedit editor.
So run this command to open gedit:
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.
In the blackist.conf file, add the following line:
blacklist ndiswrapper
Save the change.
Then reboot and retest wireless using the bcmwl-kernel-source driver.
A similar issue was solved using the bcmwl-kernel-source driver here:
https:/
If it still does not work after all this, then I suggest doing a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 from a LiveCD session and then simply installing the bcmwl-kernel-source driver.
Regards,
Mark

Hi Mark:
Did everything above and didn't work. I didn't have wireless or wired connections. Can you explain how to do a "clean" install of ubuntu 10.04? Again I looked into reinstalling on forums/internet and there just seemed to be a lot of "noise" with everyone having something specific they were trying to achieve.
I just want to reinstall and try the above again.
Thanks for your continued help! I really appreciate it!

Clean install means doing backup of all your personal data (in /home directory and other personal directories), then booting from Ubuntu 10.04 LiveCD and installing from the LiveCD Session into an empty root partition. During install, choose to format the root partition to make sure the install is "clean".
The best procedure after doing a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, is to AVOID ndiswrapper, AVOID blacklisting any drivers, and to ONLY run the following commands while using a working, wired Internet connection:
You need a working WIRED internet connection to run the following 2 commands:
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install bcmwl-kernel-source
Then reboot and retest wireless.
A similar issue was solved using the bcmwl-kernel-source driver here:
https:/
Can you help with this problem?
Provide an answer of your own, or ask Rob Hamilton for more information if necessary.
